New computer, part 2

edited June 2007 in Help / Advice Forum
I posted recently about purchasing a new computer, and was inspired to build my own, as a friend told me he could teach me.

If you guys could review this guy for me I would much appreciate it!

https://secure.newegg.com/NewVersion/Wishlist/PublicWishDetail.asp?WishListNumber=4973651&WishListTitle=Robbie%27s+PC

I have a monitor, os, and CD drive so all of those are non-issues

Basically what I want this computer to do is run City of villains, Oblivion, and a few other games, plus be a nice school computer (which is easy, as all it has to do is run office, essentially)

how will it fare with those standards?

I don't think you'll see oblivion running well with that card and 1GB of ram - you should be able to run it at lower resolutions and settings though. Your power supply also doesn't have a 6-pin PCIe power connector for the video card.

If you can get a 512MB graphics card and 2GB of system ram instead you'll be mostly ok.

What kind of budget are you on?

Honestly, not to open the demonic gates of the Intel vs AMD underworld, but Intel chips are way better.

As am I, but I'll only concede if you admit the P4 and its "eXtremeness" was a complete failure.

That being said, I'm ordering a Core 2 Quad shortly! eee!

    t Grimreaper: About 500 dollars, maybe 600

t drinkinstout: how PRETTY oblivion looks isnt as important as actually getting to play it. I still havent even played the game. I know visuals are a huge part but I am willing to settle for now
Also, I've never built a computer before, but Im no dummy. Does what you say mean that I need to select a new video card? Or...?

also t Grim: I guess I should have mentioned that I want something that is...adequate.. for now but can be upgraded once I make more money. I know RAM is easy to upgrade (buy more, put it in) but I'm guessing its better to grab a better video card.

like I said, I'll be running CoV/H and I want at least that to look pretty.

and also to tybeet: like I said, making oblivion pretty isnt the main priority, the main priority is getting a computer that can at least PLAY the damn game. Keep in mind I'm on a college budget. Right now I'm typing from the computer in my research lab, as I dont even own a computer myself.

If you guys could suggest better setups for about the same price range that would make the games (again, mainly CoV)...maybe not splendid but at least kind of pretty and at least let me play them.

Ive missed out on so much the last few years because of being broke, and now I have a job where I have at least SOME money to throw around. I've missed out on things like FEAR, Oblivion, Dawn of war, CoV, and many many others.

Sorry this was so long, but this is a rather large and important undertaking and I want to get it right.

edit: Tl;dr- I want the games to play and at least not look like ass. They dont have to be breathtakingly beautiful, just not...ass.

It's just that Oblivion especially makes heavy use of Intel's Hyper-threading, and that makes a huuge difference.

Wait, what? Intel hasn't put hyper threading into a chip since the first Pentium Extreme Edtion (Pentium D based)

Oblivion should play. I haven't played it but since a huge part of the game IS the environment, I personally wouldn't until I could enjoy it for what it is most known for. I just got my setup to where it should play Oblivion great and will be buying it shortly.

And yes, I should have said that the video card you have will not physically work with the case/power supply you have chosen. If I were you, I would buy a case and PS separate - get a small cheap case and make sure to get a PS that has a 6 pin PCIe power connector - all (I believe) new PCI Express x16 cards need the extra power.

What he said. "Hyperthreading" was pretty much entirely marketing bullshit, kind of like "blast processing", "Vista-certified", "Cell technology", etc. etc.

I'd change the motherboard to this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813127018 and the CPU to this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115013.

The e4300 because its highly overclockable (have mine performing as a e6300 on stock cooling) and that motherboard as its the one I have no and haven't had any problems with it. There is an issue about installing windows to a IDE harddrive, but since you are getting a SATA one it wont matter.

Maybe he means he bumped the FSB up to 533 and knocked down the multiplier.

I meant to type e6600, not sure how e6300 came out.

A couple changes, that will keep the price very close. I am using these components in my computer that I recently built, and they are working great. Running every game I can find on highest settings at 1280x1024(even stalker).

    AMD X2 4600+ = $98

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103751

    2 x 1gb sticks of Wintec Ampo ram = $62 + $5 shipping
(Cheapo ram, but its got great reviews. I'm using a pair, and while I did have to RMA one pair, the second pair is working great. I'd give it a try, works great, and you could always return it if its not great for you)

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820161677

    Sapphire X1950 Pro 256mb = $145 - $20 Mail in rebate

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102061

I'm wary to recommend a motherboard, however. I used an ABIT KN9, but its out of stock. If you want to use the components I listed, I'm sure someone can help you find a good motherboard to use with it.

Also, with the changes I've made, you end up paying just about the same amount, after the mail in rebate, as you were planning on. With twice as much ram, a better processor, and a better video card.

What does RMA'ing mean? I'm really kind of ignorant on these matters, sorry. :P
