Cosplay ideas?

I lost a bet, and now I have to do some form of cosplay that does not involve donning a fursuit: my figure, it must be shown. To renege on this bet would spell the fragmentation of a decent friendship and also make me lose out on having a lot of fun.

So, here's the non-technical side: who or what can one dress up as when one is five-six, slender, flat, and wishes the eyes to be drawn towards nice legs and butt? My boyfriend suggested any character who might wear something like a gorgeous blue Chinese dress I already have, but that doesn't sufficiently count. Anime, video games, anything relevant appreciated!

Æthelred implies an important point, how much do you have to spend on this? If you want to look like Yaya Han, you're looking at $$$. Not to mention a lot of time and effort. Are you just trying to find a character with easily matchable more or less everyday clothes that just happen to be a little hotter than you usually wear?

Wait a second, is this for anime cosplay or that weird furry stuff? If its anime then do a Yahoo! search on sexy cosplay wear for inspiration. If its furry then I have no clue, maybe a raccoon?

I'm willing to spend up to 100 bucks on material, etc., and a friend of mine whose cosplay is particularly awesome has offered to teach me how to sew.

And no, I'm not a furry; my point was that I couldn't get away with something like Okami costumery.

Any chance you could take a picture of your face so we know what to work with? Also, when you say you must show your figure - does that mean a minimum percent of exposed skin, or is clothing allowed?

Do you want to wear something like the mentioned dress, or more boyish? I don't know what kind of clothing you usually wear, but you could get some aviator goggles, cap, leather belt, and plastic revolver and go as Kino.

A picture (full body) would be helpful. So would a list of series of video games/anime that you like.

Really, in regards to cosplay, I'd suggest just doing someone that you like from a series that you like that is workable with your body type.

This may sound insensitive or whatever, but if you're not secure with your body, a lot of good cosplay possibilities for a girl are gone. That's fine, it's your call, but you should specify how "revealing" you want to be with this. Because if not, Chun-li isn't the way to go.

A few factors you may not have taken account that might help with some ideas:

    1) Roughly where are you located geographically? In particular, what kind of climate will you be in? Costumes can get very hot and this is currently summer in the northern hemisphere so some ideas may be out the window due to desire to avoid getting dehydrated and/or heat stroke.

    2) How much walking around in said costume will you be doing? Depending on how a costume is made, some stuff may shift around or just get annoying with a lot of movement.

    3) How many people do you expect to be around? Similar to the above concerns, only now you may have to worry about swords/tails/wings/big beefy arm sticking out your back smacking people. Given you uncertainty, I don't think you're going to gravitate towards something where this is a concern, but keeping in mind how comfortable you will be getting around other people in a costume is worth keeping in mind.

Oh, and how long is your hair and what color is it? I doubt you'll want to get a wig for a first costume so this can be an important detail.

Wow, thanks for all the feedback. You guys are right, I do need to clarify a lot: I'm 22, spoiled *hint*, located in Hellsville, Texas and thus looking to show some skin for more than one purpose, and willing to put in a lot of time and nitpicking because the earliest possible con I'd next attend - and not very likely - would be in late fall, more like the beginning of next year.

As for the friendship, she's fun to hang out with, but an abrasive twat when it comes to anything that might possibly be derived as any kind of insult, so I only do so when it's worth the hassle. I don't place bets in which the terms would be intrinsically unacceptable, i.e. I kinda wanted an excuse to do this anyway, so no worries there.

I'm also a massive ho for Final Fantasy, though it's been frequently done anyway (which isn't much of a distinction these days--somebody cosplayed a goddamn Tonberry at A-kon, and it was insanely good); also, I heart Bleach, Fullmetal Alchemist, Hunter x Hunter, Escaflowne, and just about any decent console RPG.

It's not that I'm reluctant to put my face on the 'Net so much as my expression in this pic being really non-comically awful.

I'm not touching FF, and like you've said pretty much everybody has done it to death.

With that hair color you could pull off Orihime Inoue really easily (aside from the bust but then that can downplayed because she doesn't usually show any cleavage), but the only way to get much skin out of it would be to go school girl ala this, and that really isn't very technical (wow it's a skirt, a shirt, and bow tie... whee).

Where FMA is concerned, Lust and Sloth are much more glamour than skin, and really only work with a fair amount of bust.

HxH is sausage fest as one might expect and the female characters don't go for skin.

Escaflowne has no hot characters, and I hate how it's drawn.

Really my mind keeps going back to characters from fighting games (probably because I'm not really the king of all animu). I'd look at something from King of Fighters or DOA or Dynasty Warriors (you just don't get much more classy + hot than Zhen Ji or Diao Chan or to a lesser extent Xing Cai, Da Qiao, and Sun Shang Xiang).

If you just end up desperate for an excuse to cosplay random leggy girls, there's always Agent Aika... that whole Anime is just one long panty shot. Evidenced by this egregious example. (Which, while containing no nudity, is probably NSFW unless you're like me, locked in an otherwise empty room at 1:30 am.) They even made a prequel series called Aika R-16, which should have been called The Search for More Panties.

Actually I thought about seriously suggesting Aida Rion from that animu, who appears briefly in that clip (the redhead with the glasses), but with no real technical value to her clothing that would have just been my preference for meganekko talking.

(Also, for the record, when I talked about people suggesting things that were the opposite of what I expected, it was things like Aika that I was expecting. I have become my own stereotype! Woohoo!)

    In any case,

Well considering the OP's parameters of "wishes the eyes to be drawn towards nice legs and butt" a character whose distinct costume includes really baggy long sweatpants would seem the opposite of the request. However there is this version of that character... or the super vanilla boring version.

Her first post said she was "slender, flat, and wishes the eyes to be drawn towards nice legs and butt". Slender & flat generally means boyish characters, and eye-drawing would be some sort of tight clothing. The snake thing was pretty weird though, at least my suggestion was female.

@Tsuki: to me, your hair is the limiting factor. Not many characters I can think of have light red hair, and most have either short-cut or long hair.

You might be able to pull off Asuka - she's short, a redhead, and has three different "recognizable" costumes to pick from. But, she's a very popular character to cosplay (AKA done to death).
    1168885545667xe6.jpg

If you wanted to cut your hair short, you could also go as Nausicaa. The costume might be a bit hard to make, but I've never seen a Nausicaa cosplayer before, so you'll stand out pretty well. Also, you should probably watch the movie itself to get costume ideas (I can't find many pictures of her).

What's the temperature and humidity like in Texas in late fall/early winter? This is a huge factor. I've had friends take along portable neck coolers and the like so they don't pass out in their costumes during the hotter months in states further north. I doubt you'll do anything heavy enough to need that, but I'm not sure what Texas weather feels like outside of spring/summer.

I don't have a suggestion at the moment, but I've compiled the suggestions made since you posted a picture and added comments. Not meant to discredit anyone or bash their suggestions, but just to give my thoughts on the matter. I've cosplayed a few times, in case you're wondering-- but different things work for different people. ^^

Orihime - Not really recognisable save for her hair clips (and her huge breasts) in my opinion, and therefore not that preferable.

Sloth - It could work, and the hair colour is semi-similar. It's not too hard of an outfit as you could buy a prom dress resembling it versus sewing, even. Make sure you get the oroboros mark done in some semi-permanant manner, as mine as Lust rubbed off all too often.

Zhen Ji, Diao Chan, etc - The costumes are really complex, to an extent that I'd be uncomfortable to work with, and I've done a few cosplays. A first timer without sewing experience would probably find it quite difficult... but if you think you can do it, go for it.

Female Solid Snake - Could actually work. Though it's hard, again, to make the armory bits, and also to wear it in a decent manner. Showing off too much is worse, IMO, than showing off too little.

Cammy - Is quite common, too, but it should be a pretty good choice. You could work with your hair there, and as long as you don't mind how little she's wearing, it's an option. Make sure you sew that green part, though, as you're not going to find a swimsuit that looks decent enough to pass off as it.

Jill Valentine, miniskirt version - Fully doable, and relatively easy to construct. You can also wear the clothes at a later point in time. XD I'd recommend you wear a wig or get a haircut and dye if you plan to do so, though. (Wigs aren't that expensive!) A good place to get them are here: http://www.amphigory.com/wigs.html

Ouendan Cheerleader - Personally, I considered them (and the EBA divas), but they reveal more midriff than I was comfortable with. Best done in threes, so why not hook that girl who was bugging you to do cosplay in the first place to join you?

    Agent Aika - From a GIS, I couldn't identify her or spot any good identifying features... aside from... a lot of crotches directed towards the screen. But uh... I'm assuming you don't WANT guys to stare at your crotch or trying to take a photo of your panties, so I'd recommend against it. xD;;

Miranda (?) from Noir - Not a very recognisable costume. You'd also need a wig.

Leeloo - That outfit is doable if you like it. Please, though, don't do the white strips of cloth one; seeing more than one person attempt it, I've come to the conclusion that it really can't be achieved by people out of the movies, especially when one wants to walk around. x_x

Winry - Has baggy pants, and shows midriff, requires a bit of chest. Is also quite often done, so I wouldn't recommend it. The alternate Winry costume is hard to recognise, as well-- though if you like it enough, go for it.

Asuka - Could work with the hair, yes. It's going to be complicated to make a skin-tight suit, though, as mentioned above. She is really recognisable, though.

Nausicca - Gibili cosplay! :O It could work, especially if you choose the more recognisable outfit and are willing to cut your hair. XD

If you want more opinions, I'd recommend joining the forums at Cosplay.com, where they've got places devoted to answering which characters one looks like and how to make costumes.

Ooh, good one--but my FLCL-crazed other half would never stop attempting to have sex with me. Also, I'm not sure all that fabric would be desirable; for those of you unaware, this part of Texas has atrocious heat and humidity, so the heat index hovers around 90 even as the summer wanes.

Nausicaa has the same problem, but huge originality points. I just might try that one. :D

Heat and humidity are the bane of cosplaying. I have no workable ideas off the top of my head that won't cause you to shrivel up into a dessicated husk in that weather, so I'll have to wait before contributing on that front.

I assume that any cons you would be at would also be in Texas (and that you would have to do at least some walking to reach the site from wherever you're staying during the con)?

Not a small problem. You will be walking around a lot to begin with. And since you are in costume, other con goers are going to want to stop you to take a picture of you in costume so you will be standing around a fair amount too depending on how well done the costume is and how popular the character is. More so if any of your friends are in related costumes.
