Buying a Macbook Pro soon.. hard drive choice

I'm able to get a special deal on Macbook laptops of 40% off the price and free 3 years applecare. So, i'll be selling my Macbook soon and going pro.

However, i'm undecided on what hard drive to go for.

I have three choices:

160GB 5400rpm
200GB 4200rpm
160GB 7200rpm

Here's how I see it, i'm into photography.. typically I handle my photos on my Macbook and then archive them to dvdrs (and my desktop pc). However, last time I went on holiday to Australia I accumulated roughly 50GB of photos and suddenly had to rush out and buy some dvdrs before I ran out of hard drive space.

I am considering buying an external hard drive enclosure and using a 250GB IDE drive I have spare to store the photos on, when I for example go on holiday to Australia.

Or, should I instead opt for the 200GB drive and forgo bothering with an external drive?

Thing is the 200GB is slower than the default 160GB drive, I could even opt for the 7200rpm 160GB and go with an external drive. Question is, how much would that affect battery life?

Anyone here who has a Macbook Pro and is into photography? What are peoples views? Should I stick with the 160GB and go with an external drive or perhaps take my chances and simply write to a slew of dvds whenever I start running low on space.

Damn, I envy your sick ass deal...

Well, my friend says he notices a difference between 5400 and 7200, but me... not really that much.

What I have is a 120GB 5400rpm one with a 250GB external HDD. Suits me fine.

-sigh- My hard drive died the other day. I dropped my laptop. Good thing a new one is coming in today thanks to warranties..

    How are you getting that?

Also, I would just stick with the default and get an external drive. For the amount of money they want to upgrade them and for how much external drives cost nowadays, it's not worth it to get the larger or faster one. It's never been economical to get a RAM/drive upgrade right from Apple.

Well, technically it's 38%... but rounding it off to 40% makes it sound cooler.

I got people in the high places. (read: brother)

Also, it's not just for Macbooks.. it's for any kind of laptop, but well.. Macbooks (the pro's especially) are the best laptops around. (imo)

Faster drive, sink the money for a larger drive into more ram as that will help you with imaging software. You can buy a terabyte lacie drive for $300 or so. Though I wouldn't buy a lacie drive that big. In my experience, they tend to overheat and die.

I'd stick with the default drive as well, the faster drive will eat your battery life faster, but if you're getting the 17", you're probably not going to be lugging that around everywhere. I'd just feel safer about my pictures if I had an external, as someone else said, what if you do drop it? Your pictures are now gone, =/

If you do put more memory in, don't get it from them. 2gig SODIMMs run around $150 each, so that's significantly less than they want, plus you will have two 1gig sticks left over to resell or something.

No way am I getting the 17", I've messed around on one and I felt it was just too large.. i've got a good backpack for carrying my camera and laptop in. So lugging it around isn't that much of a worry, although weight is a slight worry. (baggage weight limits at airports)

At the moment it's looking to be 15", 256MB 8600M GT, 160GB (5400rpm), glossy screen, 2GB ram with a rather nice 3 years of apple care.
