The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
Insiders close to development studio NST allege to IGN that the software company's Wii action title, tentatively titled Project H.A.M.M.E.R., has been terminated by publisher Nintendo. Sources further claim that the team formerly working on the title is now underway with one or more efforts that fall into the "expanded audience" lineup of games.
Ah.
One of the things I feared most with the Wii. Is Nintendo going to shun their long time audience in favor of a demographic with deeper pockets? They have a history of ignoring some of their more die hard fans (Mother 3), and lack of interest is definitely not a factor in the games cancellation, if true.
I guess we'll know more in '08, specifically, how Nintendo will handle the line between "expanded audiences" and it's core gamers.
Until them, I'm a bit bummed that this won't be making it. Who wants to take bets that next on the guillotine is Day of Crisis?
oh please no, I hope so much this isn't true! The game looked so promising, why would they suddenly decide to scrap it?
"Nintendo's goal is to bring you the most casual, generic games possible at the amazingly affordable price of 19.95! Make sure you purchase one of our thirty breakout clones!"
I'm not really surprised, it's been a year and we've seen nothing of it. It also didn't look like anything other than running around waggling so I doubt it's much of a loss.
Project Hammer did kinda look like shit, though. I think we'll have to wait and see how the whole expanded audience concept works, but I sort of feel it already. There isn't a lot of games in the near future I'm interested in - practically no third party titles, anyway.

Well, if you look at the development team's credentials, they haven't really done a good action game since the GBC.

you know, sometimes I want to see Nintendo taking the third place behind Sony and Microsoft again. It's cool they're successful now, but it doesn't make it any better when you're not their main target audience anymore.
I don't see how this is shunning die hard Nintendo fans if it's true. It's not even a known franchise. If anything, maybe it's part of their effort to be more 3rd party friendly, by giving them a chance to develop some more traditional types of games.

Hee hee, people are still hoping the Wii will have decent 3rd Party support. As long as I get my Metroid, Mario, and Smash soonly, I'm not sure I care...I mean, that's $150 right there. How much exactly are we looking to spend this year?

What
It's long been a problem for Nintendo that they monopolize the software market on their own systems. If they focus development on key franchises and non-traditional games, that opens up a space for 3rd parties to come in with more traditional types of games and new franchises.

Hoping?
It's a freaking forgone conclusion at this point.
Any third party that doesn't support the Wii is going to bleed money the way sales are going.

I want to be disappointed, but we knew very little about this game anyway besides the fact that you run around smashing stuff with a hammer. And as exciting as that sounds, it IS possible that it could get stale after a while.
The main problem people seem to be having here is that they're scared Nintendo is scrapping all their traditional, core games in favor of "blue ocean" games. I don't really think this is the case. Not yet anyway. It's only one game (that didn't look all THAT great to begin with), and there's still plenty more traditional stuff coming down the pipe for those of us waiting for more meaty games.
As long as it doesn't become a trend, I'm not too worried about it. If this is even true.
So long as they've got Smash Bros and Metroid coming, Nintendo doesn't have to make any games for "core" gamers. Right?
Yeah, Nintendo doesn't give a shit about deep games. It's completely casual from here on out. Metroid is now a mini-game fest where you play whack-a-metroid with a giant foam hammer and jump rope with space pirates.
Hammer looked interesting, but the chance of suck was fairly high. Looks like it came true.

Then they bought monolith soft just so they could dissolve the team working on Disaster and put them on mario party 9, and the next big mini-game fest.
Given the sales of Melee and the current level of anticipation for Brawl, I seriously doubt they'll even need more than one game.

I'll never understand that logic.
"It's NINTENDO'S FAULT that they make such good games." That just doesn't make sense.
I'm almost positive it was playable on the show floor.
Everything I saw of the game never impressed me at all really.
I remember reading some reviews or something, but I hardly remember seeing any actual gameplay of this game and kept wondering why everyone was so excited for it.
How do we get from "single game that was in development canceled" to "Nintendo intends on concetrating only on games that consist of mini-games"?
This isn't even jumping to a conclusion. This is catapaulting yourself across the Grand Canyon, landing on your head and then shouting the first thing that comes to mind.

Assuming it's even true.
Oh well, still looking forward to Disaster.
That reminds me, weren't both just recently listed on Nintendo's "upcoming" list?
Like Mega Man Legends? Then check out my story, Legends of the Halcyon Era - An Adventure in the World of Mega Man Legends on TMMN and AO3!

It was merely a comment on how whenever a Nintendo rep is questioned about "core" gamers they say "Smash Bros and Metroid!"
They are going to need more than 2 games.
im starting to consider selling my wii to the "expanded audience".

I'm not entirely sure why I wanted one so badly, in hindsight.

Brawl, Prime 3, Galaxy cancelled.
Mario Kart and F-Zero on indefinite hiatus.
More news as we get it.
You and me both.
I'm almost positive it was playable on the show floor.

Especially when said franchise is a little darker and more "mature" than their standard fare.

Nobody seriously meant that.
