Mac Pro et Video Cards

When I bought my Mac Pro I opted for the NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT.

Frankly, it's disappointing - especially when trying to play S.T.A.L.K.E.R. or HL:2 in XP.

Since the Apple happens to be all about using their own firmware, I'm pretty limited in my video card options. I've been eyeing the ATI Radeon X1900 XT, but I've heard a lot about these things frying themselves. I'm not into Kernal panics.

So, PA, anyone have info on the ATI or any other Mac Pro-compatible cards out there?

Mac specialized video cards are still required? I thought that went out with the PowerPC platform.

I believe so. If it's not an EFI vs BIOS issue, it's a driver issue.

This was the only place I could find that carried somthing other than overpriced 1900GS/XT cards. Link

Can anyone confirm if the 8800GTS is Mac Pro compatible? The product page states "Universal" as the platform.

But then again, why would a store named "Mac Mall" Sell incompatible video cards.

Its most likley a driver / EFI issue. According to various Mac forums, the 8800 works within Windows, but OSX won't boot. Otherwise you could try and flash a ATI X1900 or a Geforce 7900, which is cheaper than spending an arm and a leg for the mac versions of these cards (although you won't get the best game performance available on the market).

I have heard some rumors, that the new update 10.4.10 will include support for Nvidia 8xxx GPUs (the new Macbooks include Geforce 8600 GPUs).

    Thanks for the link.

Has anyone had any experience with the 1900XT? I'm willing to shell out for something that'll work and work well if it isn't going to die on me in six months.
