Selling old LPs (Records)

My dad died last year and left behind an extensive collection of cds and records, mostly of rather esoteric artists like Captain Beefheart, Sun Ra and John Cage. Right now there are maybe 50 records rotting away in my basement and I don't have a working record player or the desire to listen to them. They were important to him, though and I'd like someone who actually wants them to have them, so I'm wondering what the best way to get the records out would be. Ebay? Craigslist? Just head on down to a record store? Also, where would be a good place to get a general idea of how much they're worth, so that I can price them decently?

Any help is welcome.

In my experience you are best off selling things part by part on eBay. If you sell your whole record collection as it is the less valuable pieces won't get much and many buyers won't be able to afford the price of an entire collection, especially if there are only one or two records they want.

Look on eBay to see what each record is going for. Then, put the ones that will seem to make you some decent coin up there and you should do pretty well. Record stores tend to give you next to nothing for old LPs.

Sweet, Sun Ra is fucking awesome.

I'd probably list it on eBay myself, as it'd give you wider exposure. I know there are sites out there that detail the some of Sun Ra's recordings - but alot of them were made by the Arkestra itself and are really hard to come by. So if you find some really esoteric stuff, collectors might be willing to pay good money for them. I can't speak to the other two, though.
