So I'm sure by now you've all heard that Blockbuster Video has chosen to support the blue-ray format over HD-DVD. However HD-DVD still has the advantage of being more reasonably priced.
Personally, I just bought an HD-DVD player and I think it's really really cool, and I can't imagine blue-ray being superior enough to warrant paying twice as much for a player, no matter what blockbuster does to limit their customer base.
I looked around and I didn't see a thread about this yet (if i missed it I'm sorry) and I'm curious to know what SE++ thinks of the high-def movement.

If what I heard about Sony and Blu-Ray not wanting to have anything to do with the porn industry is true, and thus HD-DVDs picking up arguably the largest multimedia industry in the world, it's only a matter of time before Blu-Ray loses out to HD-DVD despite being the better technology...all over again, just like Beta vs VHS. Way to go, Sony.
Who seriously wants to re-buy their movie collection?
I don't intend to upgrade my DVD collection or anything, but I do intend to keep adding to it. When newer movies come out, I'll be getting them in high def.
Hasn't Blockbuster been hemorrhaging money for the last, like, five or six years?
I mean, I don't see them dictating shit at this juncture, let alone anything as big as the "winner" of the HD war.
This is my feeling
I think that new online program they started to compete with netflix is pretty much the only thing they've got going for them.
Honestly when everyone was like "Blockbuster chose a side! The war's over!" i thought it was a pretty massive overreaction.

No fuck that no one wants to actutally pay for HD-see-every-single-scar-and-pock-mark-on-that-ugly-ass-pornstar's-body-DVD porn.
With porn the less definition the better.
I mean, unless you're one of those people who watches porn for shock value.
There are a thousand different niches out there.
I can't imagine people as ugly as you describe getting successful careers in porn anyhow.
I think this is ultimately going to turn out like HD-Audio vs. SACD, where the average consumer decides that the expensive buy-in costs aren't worth the benefits, and both formats sink into obscurity.
DVD's succeeded because:
- Cost of entry became extremely cheap
and most importantly
- The entry price was worth the massive benefits over the previous technology (VCR tapes).
The only thing these formats have over DVD's is superior image quality (assuming you have a high-def television and a capable player). That's it. Not nearly enough to convince Joe Shmoe to upgrade.

Yeah but television is going to be broadcasting exclusively in HD in a couple years. Eventually, everyone will have to get an HDTV or an adapter to make the signal more shitty for your old TV. Once everyone has the hardware they're gonna wanna take advantage of it.
If I have to get a new TV just to watch TV after that date, I'm just going to say "screw you" to TV.
Honestly I don't know.
I have an HDTV already so I stopped paying attention to the details. I'm sure it's on that site I quoted somewhere.

From what I've seen it breaks down like this
Softcore: Like on Cinemax and such, good looking actors made to look good by decent direction however you don't see much and all the sex is simulated
Vivid: Actors that look like and usually are strippers who look halfway decent save for all the boob job scars
Hardcore: Butt-ugly actors who look and usually are strung out on blow, covered in bruises and doing things that are more cringe-worthy than arousing

No. Porn does not dictate format. Blu-Ray is winning.
I will not be able to afford any sort of new television by 2009, at least I have no plans that allow me to be able to afford it. Not that I wouldn't want an HDTV, It's just that mine works perfectly fine.

I'm $3,000 okay with watching component quality DVDs.

both of them
It is sex.
Edit: I stand corrected. Although I didn't see it on blue-ray in any stores.
its like a wonderful disney movie, everyone wins!

just like the battle i'm about to take through cyclonic winds and chill temperatures to get some juice
Not like snuff films never hurt nobody
I don't think digital distribution for HD content is there yet.

You guys want some juice?
Do you have sex in the dark?
Watching an amorphous blob oscillate with another amorphous blob is pretty hot.

I imagine they will have HDTVs by then that are a little more reasonable for the average consumer.
I mean, suddenly you have this big market for it.
So everyone is going to have to conform to what the videophiles like?
No. Porn does not dictate format. Blu-Ray is winning.
Yeah, that's what I said when they came out with those new-fangled color TVs. I can see just fine in black and white, thank you very much.
