Contra Turns 20, Contra 4 Coming To DS

(In my best Sally Struthers' voice) "Do you like shooting aliens? Sure, we all do."

Konami just dropped a line saying that Contra is 20 years old. Wow, that is a lot of alien shooting action. But to make things better, we are going to get a new Contra, Contra 4, for the DS later this year. According to Konami, "the game pushes 2D side-scrolling action in an all-new direction with gunplay that spans two full screens, original gameplay mechanics that grant players deadlier abilities than ever before, and frantic multiplayer functionality."

Contra 4 will also let two players play together, though it's unknown if we are talking locally or over the WiFi Connection.

Writes the company's official statement:

"The use of both screens for the game’s core action also allows for massive boss battles as players try to seek and destroy the weak points of sky-high enemies. A first for the series, Contra 4 introduces a grappling hook accessory that lets players grab onto elements of the environment directly above them. Whether using it to avoid oncoming dangers or attack from a strategic vantage point, the grappling hook allows for new combat situations and dramatic set pieces that underscore the game’s adrenaline-soaked pedigree."

I think we'll be needing to band together soon to take down the "new extraterrestrial menace: the terrifying Black Viper" very soon. Now where did I put my spread gun?

I thought Contra 4 was on the PS2 (with a 3D one on the PS1 that didn't count in any way)...

Companies need to get their shit together as far as numbering games go.

I don't get it, why does everyone think you need the 30 life code. When you get in a role, the game is dead easy. When you're rolling you should be able to beat it 5 times in a row without dieing.

Now I want to play Contra III on my SNES. Too bad my AC adapter is lost =/ .... Does anyone think the AC adapters from those twin SNES/NES systems will work?

Maybe the numbered Contras are on Nintendo consoles?

    Contra - NES
Super C (regarded as Contra II, right?) - NES
    Contra III - SNES
    Contra IV - DS

    My best guess.

Contra is one of those games where I might have only played the first few levels of the game, but it was still enough to make me love the game. Although I was always disappointed whenever the games would have levels apart from the sidescrolling, like the overhead parts in 3.

    Also...

This numbering also conveniently wipes away the crappier and less popular Contras. III had to be the last one that anyone played anyway, except maybe Hard Corps.

And no screens? That's lame if it's coming out this year.

Contra III (aka "Super Probotector" in Europe) rocks. Dual homing missiles + spinjump = swirly ball of missiles!

I could never beat it on hard, though. Damn the last boss. Some of his modes were impossible.

I've got the GBA port of Alien Wars sitting here beside me. Been waiting to play until I can get a hold of my much-brighter-screen-DS which is at my parents place right now. (it's pink. That's how I roll.) Pretty exciting news but frankly I can't imagine them making anything better than the testosterone-filled slaughter of aliens that is Contra III.

Indeed. My friend and I beat the game every friday without the 30 lives code. We're trying to do speed runs, and got just under 11 mins last week.

    Can't wait for this.

I think since the game is said to be two years after III, that might be why it's #4. That, or it's just a placeholder.

The two PS1 games are already retconned out, and Shattered Soldier was pretty good.

Contra motherfucking 4? Bionic Commando-esque grappling hook? Portable goodness? I'm in. I'm going to ram my Contra III cart into my SNES to celebrate.

Actually, Capcom needs to make a new goddamned Bionic Commando game as well, too. I'll take a DS remake of the first one, too. I need to blow up Hitler's face apart again.

    Shattered Soldier totally rocks.

If this is set two years after Contra III, it most likely deals with the post Alien Wars events that lead up to the flashbacks and backstory we see in Shattered Soldier.

Also, for the record, Black Viper isn't a totally new villain or alien force. He/it first appeared in Operation C on the Game Boy. I believe Operation C is part of the official canon if I remember the files in Shattered Soldier correctly.

Damn. They should do this shit with a new side-scrolling TMNT remake. I mean, the first one for NES was the shiznitty-bomb-bomb. I wouldn't mind seeing an updated version for the DS. Hot stuff.

The DS is just kicking ass and taking names.

It was Legacy of War and Contra Adventure that never existed.
But I am fine just ignoring anything past Contra III too.

Also, what is up with all those game difficulty complaints? Two of the achievements on the XBLA is beat it under 11 minutes and beat it without using a continue. Neither were that hard to get.

I'm kind of pissed they made it harder for the US release. I mean, was the Japanese one too easy or something? Or were they just trying to make it more traditional with one-hit kills?
