Well I just got my XPS laptop in and it is sweet as all get out. The only problem is I don't know what kind of games I should load it up with. These are games that I am going to be playing at work between customers (this can be quite long). I am not sure about internet, the only way I would have internet access at work is if I am able to leech off a wireless network somewhere in the shopping center, which is pretty unlikely.
The only games I have thought of so far are Diablo 2, Starcraft, and Warcraft 3.
Keep in mind that this thing should be able to run most newer games too, it is pretty beefy for a laptop. So don't be afraid to suggest a newer game.
I am thinking the old lucasarts adventure games would probably be a good choice too.
Nethack is good in a pinch. Don't torture yourself; go with the graphical version. Hmmm, I also enjoy playing the Touhou shmups, but that's not everyone's cup of tea (they are hard).
System Shock 2 is pretty good, from what I've heard (if you can find it on E-Bay). Half-Life, Half-Life 2. Neverwinter Nights and its expansions had decent singleplayer. Titan Quest had ridiculously long, Diablo-esque singleplayer (if you liked Diablo, you'll like Titan Quest).
I guess I could try Dwarf Fortress again. I couldn't figure out what the fuck was going on when I first played it. It looks like the kind of thing that would be really fun if I took the time to learn it.
Heroes of Might and Magic V + Hammers of Fate
Baldur's Gate II + Throne of Baal
X-Com: Enemy Unknown
Oblivion + Shivering Isles
The Thing
Freespace 2 (mouse works fine, don't let joystick fetish hardcores tell you otherwise)
Arx Fatalis
GalCiv II + Dark Avatar
NWN 2
Prince of Persia: Sands of Time
The games that I have on my laptop are:
civ 4
galactic civilizations 2
dominions 2
invade earth
arcomage
With an XPS laptop you should be able to play just about any single player game that you like. If you are going to be playing at work and people need to be able to contact you by instant message or email it is a good idea to only play games that can be played in a window. If you are not used to playing games in that mode, it can take a little bit of getting used to as scrolling by tossing your mouse to the edge of the screen doesn't tend to work.
Pretty simple, you move with wasd and shoot with the mouse. Lots of different weapons and attribute combinations to mess around with, so it has a lot of replay value. Multiplayer is pretty shitty (no game-search interface, you basically have to either be on a LAN or already have an IP to connect to), and they get out of synch pretty quickly, but single player is awesome.
No One Lives Forever 2
Pirates!
Max Payne 1 or 2
Warcraft 3
Counter-Strike
Guild Wars series
Diablo 2 (There is a ladder reset on June 25th!)
StarCraft: Brood Wars

Galactic Civilizations 2 (and it's expansion). Also, Freeciv.
Some of these are fantastic. Load them up before work and you're golden.
Old SSI games if you can find em.

So is Quake 1 and 2.
Thanatos Edit: No emulator discussion.

Three and Five are good. I really love that series.
EDIT THIS ASAP
You can't mention the E word here.
The Sims 2, The Movies or other games like that might be good. I also can suggest some puzzle games, Myst and the like are good time-passers.

It's a budget game, you can find it for 20 bucks. Demo is here: http://www.sigma-team.net/alienshooter_2/upload/as2demo.exe

Seconded, probably the laptop-ing-est game ever. Lord knows how many times I played that on the bus.
Also, forget Nethack, get Ancient Domains of Mystery.

But, as for laptop games?
Geometry wars is on Steam now for $2.50. If that's not a great game to kill time I don't know what is.
