RC thingies of the flying variety

A while back there was a thread on the Silverlit X-twin/Aero Ace line of cheap RC airplanes. These are 2 channel airplanes that cost something like 20-25$ and are great fun outdoors. I have one of these but since I live in the city I do not get much chance to play with it:

I clearly needed something to play with inside, and since my appartment is pretty small, it would have to be a helicopter. Silverlit makes a small 2-channel heli, the PiccoZ that is called the Havoc in the states I believe. It is about the same price as the Aero Ace planes and great fun for what it is. I have one of these and it is fun flying it around since it is completely indestructible. Get one if have not already, it really brings out the child in you:

However, the PiccoZ is only two channel, meaning that is is in a state of slow constant movement forward. Fun, but not that controllable. Clearly, a third channel is needed. A couple of weeks ago I stumbled upon the site of a HongKong company that sold a three channel very small heli called the Micro Mosquito for 27$ including free airfreight anywhere in the world. Hmm.... this seemed to good to be true, but I figured that if nothing showed up I would not really mind loosing that amount of money. I ordered the heli and some other stuff, and about a week afterwards the stuff showed up. I think the postage cost something like half the value of my order... anyway, this heli is so much fun! I've done some modifications on it, and it flies like a dream. Mind you, it is not crash-proof like the PiccoZ, but much more controllable. This is what it looks like:

Later, I realised that the heli I have is actually a boot-legged pirate version of the one in the picture, but it flies, so I am happy. In case any one wonders where I ordered it, this is the place:

So, what other small, cheap remote controlled things do you have? I'm thinking about getting one of those small remote controlled submarines for my fish tank. After all, you can not have too many toys....

The Havoc is a kickass flyer and durable as hell. I love mine and people are always very impressed by it.

It is great, you can fly it into a wall and not only will it be unscathed but it might also continue flying right off the wall.

    I highly recommend it.

The Havoc is pretty squirrelly though (as with all RC helicopters, I guess). Once, in the multitude of crashes that thing was subjected too, one of the the small weights on the smaller main rotor came off and the thing wouldn't fly since it was completely off balance. Supergluing those bitches in is a must. Also, setting the trim everytime you fly is a pain, since the controller resets itself when you turn it off.

Still, I got it for $20 at Costco, and it's pretty awesome.

My mother in-law got me a PiccoZ last Christmas. Even though it's control is limited, it's still awesome. It's more of an exercise in keeping it from hitting everything than flying around.

That being said, I've been tempted to buy a second for modding purposes. There's tons of sites with mods.

These are all electric powered, right?
Because man, nothing beats the smell of glow-fuel when playing with RC planes.

How loud are the motors on the tiny Air Hogs choppers?

I want to be able to launch one from my desk and land it in my neighbor's cubicle without drawing too much attention to myself.

Yeah, small, battery-powered dealies. For the Havoc, at least, it's powered by an internal battery that's recharged using a connector on the controller.

Actually, I just realized the term "RC" is a misnomer for the Havoc, since it's actually infrared.

I made a bitchin' blimp out of RC car parts and big ass balloons last year at a camp. Let me see if I can find some pictures.

Edit: Damn, I can't find the pictures anywhere on my hard drive. I hope I didn't delete them.

I ever had 5000 dollars to burn, I'd get a spy-helicopter like this

I used to have a neighbor with a turbo fan model of a F-86 Saber. That thing was one of the scariest machines I've ever laid eyes on. I'm pretty sure it was illegal to operate even though he had a fairly large amount of land. I had a glow fuel Kyosho helicopter that I saved up for with paper route money. It eventually blew up.
