The Rock/Pop/Doo-Wop Thread - NO HIPSTERS
I grow tired and wearied by the incessant drizzle of mediocre music that oozes from the indie thread. As such, I propose that we celebrate a time when
men were
manly and
rock still
rocked. That is to say, everything before 1990. Keep your Nirvana, your pumpkins and your whatever else away from me. I'm allergic.
The rules:If you look like this:Leave now.If you look like this
Or this
Or even this
Then, by all means, stay and maek poast.
We shall discuss and revere, share and cherish our most beloved albums, songs, and bands. With one caveat.
Because we can't seem to avoid turning things into wankfests, mention of those who shall not be named, namely:And
will be punishable by instant death by guitar shredding.
Seriously. We know. Or we think you're wrong and don't want to talk about it
again. Either way, don't do it. Please.
To start I shall make a few honorable mentions.
Their first and (I think) best album.
Woman Oh Woman and
Fool for you Anyway are my two favorite songs of theirs. It's classic. And classy.
Honestly. So many classics. So many. It's silly.
My favorite album of theirs. Today anyways (it changes sometimes). I really like every track, and the title track is their best single, though my favorite to listen to are both parts of Shine on you Crazy Diamond. Yeah. It's awesome.
Lastly. I'm going to break my own rule here, as it was recorded in '97, but all the songs were written before that. And it has spectacular versions of Don't Stop as well as Go Your Own Way and most of their other songs. Even
Tusk, which is kind of a crappy song on it's own, is made awesome by their use of the USC marching band as backup. The energy is great throughout the whole thing. So good.
And oh god I can't believe I almost forgot
I'm not terribly familiar with this particular album, but oh man do I love me some Styx.
Posts
how's the new queens of the stone age? (I can be more current than what you posted, right?)
Another good one:
Ha, I just broke a rule by stealth.
When I don't know what to listen to, I usually listen to a Classic Rock station, so I recognize a lot of music, but don't have any idea who the artist is. :P Thankfully, there is google.
Foreigner sucks.
Fleetwood Mac sucks.
Styx sucks.
If you consider any of the above men 'manly' and consider their music to have 'rocked' then I feel bad for you.
See below for real manly men who rocked:
Possibly NSFW, but awesome:
I think your spot on except the leppard comment
Lots of dudes could rock, but those ain't any of them.
I'm sorry you have shitty taste. Really I am.
Screw Def Leppard.
So, all but the first one? Nice.
Big Brother & the Holding Company (also Janis Joplin)
Billy Idol
Blondie
Bob Dylan
Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band
Boston
Captain Beefheart
Chicago
Dire Straits
Eagles
ELO
Elton John
Guns N’ Roses
King Crimson
Meat Loaf
Michael Jackson
Minutemen
New York Dolls
Patti Smith
Peter Frampton
Queen
Slint/Squirrel Bait
Stooges
Van Halen
Wire
If I were to throw in more pop-type stuff the list would probably be a lot longer.
Suffragette City is one of the rockingest songs ever.
When Queen is discussed, certain songs are bound to come up, like Bohemian Rhapsody and We Are the Champions. That's all well and good, but for me it's all about Ogre Battle and Seven Seas of Rhye. A lot of people don't really know how much Queen could really rock.
The Last Waltz is an awefully rockin movie
the part on "have a drink on me" where it sounds like brian johnson is busting out of the shitter in a bar and running up to punch you in the face (aaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAWWWWWWGONNA ROLL AROUND GONNA HIT THE GROUND, etc) is my nomination for rockinest moment ever
Agree.
The band actually sucks. On their own.
The Fun Machine Took A Shit and Died is just awesome.
Love it. Great album, absolutely stunning. And, of course:
Edit:
The Kinks
Cream
Black Sabbath
The Shadows
Dick Dale and the Del-Tones
The Yardbids
Golden Earring
There are so many rockin' bands out there, it's awesome!
you want men that rock?
Kiss
ACDC
Ted Nugent
GNA
and basicly every rock band before the 80s and some in the 90s and fewer still in the 00's
That is some rocking shit right there. Alvin lee is great, if somewhat repetitive overall.
Own this.
Bico
BIIICOOOOOO
because BI-CO!
edit - and Salsbury Hill being one of my top 10 favorite songs ever recorded.
Listen to this man.
You lash out at the 80s and then spout Kiss at me? Shame on you.
It's like they occupy some lame middle ground where they're too weak to be actual metal but too uptight to be real full-fledged glam-rock.
I don't think you can call The Band not awesome. You can call them a lot of things but not awesome is not one of them.
Best. Album cover. Ever. Both parts of Diamond are awesome, but I gotta go with Welcome to the Machine ftw. Have a Cigar is killer too.
I finally broke down a couple of months ago and signed up for BMG because I had a huge backlog of CDs I wanted to get--stuff I had owned on vinyl ages ago or on cassette. So far, I've picked up:
Van Halen I: Remastered. Jesus, I didn't think it'd be possible to make Eddie sound better, but I can hear a lot more texture in the guitar on this remaster. Very cool.
The Very Best of Motorhead: Who is cooler, Lemmy or God? Trick question--Lemmy is God!
AC/DC - Back In Black: It was tough picking out one AC/DC. I know this is heresy, but I've been trying to stick with "Greatest Hits" compilations with this BMG stuff. Hey, it's the iPod age and I don't have enough money to get an entire AC/DC catalogue or Van Halen catalogue.
Cheap Trick - Authorized Greatest Hits: I sing to this like Mike Demone.
The Very Best Of ZZ Top: Rancho Texicano: Almost 40 tracks of beer drinking and hellraising goodness.
Edit: Got pulled away to do work and didn't get to list Iggy Pop, Eurythmics, Prince, Siouxsie & the Banshees and Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers.
Ng Security Industries, Inc.
PRERELEASE VERSION-NOT FOR FIELD USE - DO NOT TEST IN A POPULATED AREA
-ULTIMA RATIO REGUM-
Edit: Also, MANOWAR.
Ted Nugent. American Rock Hero.
pretty much all you need to know right there. i dare anyone here to personally rock harder than Great White Buffalo
If you're into that type of metal, then Stratovarius, Blind Guardian, Angra, Kamelot, Helloween, Vanden Plas and Iced Earth would be up your alley. And noone mentioned Megadeth yet?
Manowar has some of the ugliest people on this earth in it, but Achilles, Ecstasy and Agony is pretty sick, as is Black Wind, Fire and Steel. I sometimes pop on Pandora or Blogmusik.net to listen to a few tunes. Good stuff.
they don't it be like it is but it do
Who would win in a fight: Lemmy or god?
The Police are in my triumverate of favorite bands.
You cannot deny that Madness rocks. One of the best Ska to Pop translations in the 80's.
I grew up listening to the Eagles. Tell me Hotel California isn't epic.
With Roth or without, as long as Eddie's playing guitar, Van Halen rocks out loud.
I defy anyone to play More Than A Feeling on Guitar Hero, and not feel something move inside them.
