Hey everybody, I've got a date tomorrow night at my place, and I made chocolate mousse for the girl coming over. I live on a farm, so we'll be having a dessert of fresh strawberries picked by me and chocolate mousse. Now, I have about a liter of dark rum left over from making dessert, and I'm thinking maybe some drinks would go well with the whole thing. I only know how to make lighter rum drinks like pina coladas, or the generic rum and coke which isn't really that great of a combo with this. Does anybody have a rum based drink that would go along well with such a heavy dessert? Thanks!
Dark & Stormy = 1 part dark rum + 3-4 parts ginger beer (ginger ale will do in a pinch), ice. Stir.
Painkiller = 2 parts dark rum, 1 park cream of coconut, 4 parts pineapple juice, 1 part orange juice. Stir. Add ice. Sprinkle with nutmeg if you swing that way.
Jedi Mind Trick = 1 part each dark rum, amaretto, irish cream, kahlua. 3 parts ice cream. Splash of heavy cream (optional). Blend. Garnish with cherries if you swing that way. Drink like smoothie.
Feral on
every person who doesn't like an acquired taste always seems to think everyone who likes it is faking it. it should be an official fallacy.
If you're drinking it with a mousse, I'd avoid the mind trick, and the painkiller (the pineapple/orange juice won't go well with the chocolate, and the ice cream/heavy cream will just be too damn rich).

Eh, you're probably right.
I still think the Dark & Stormy would work, though.

My favorite drink, and something that I've never seen somebody not like.
Grog - 2 parts rum, four-six parts beer(try it yourself, see which tastes better), 0.5 parts water.
Really. Don't forget the water. It makes it creamy and good, for some reason.
That sounds bizarre. On paper, that just looks like it shouldn't work at all on so many levels.
What kind of beer do you use?
Mostly whatever I can get my hands on. I've done it with budweiser(light and regular), miller high life, etc. Cheap beers usually, so better beers might be different.
My measurements aren't exact here, though. I usually use two shots of rum, half a 12oz beer, and a very small amount of water(like half of a shot). All in a mug.
I know, it sounds bad. Everyone I've introduced to it had to be goaded into trying it, then they loved it when they did try it.
Well, I've got plenty of cheap beer lying around, so I'll try out one of those as soon as possible. That sounds pretty interesting... or rather, hideous, but I'll take your word for it being good. Maybe it's the opposite of communism, which looks good on paper but blows in real life! Anyways, I'm off to bed, thanks for the quick replies.
Six and a half to eight and a half parts... I don`t really get your measurements. Maybe I`m just being dumb though.
It's a ratio.
One part rum to one part water means that if you have a shot of rum, you mix it with a shot of water. If you have a gallon of rum, you mix it with a gallon of water.
So, if you want to make a gallon of punch that is 1 part rum, 1 part pineapple juice, 2 parts orange juice, and 3 parts water, you make it with 1/6 of a gallon of rum, 1/6 of a gallon of pineapple juice, 1/3 of a gallon of orange juice, and half a gallon of water.

I thought about it a bit more later that night and realised that. I r dum.
