USB chargers are universal in their voltage right?

IE, a Griffin 12 volt car charger with mini-usb would be safe to use with a Motorola phone

I cant find the specs for the official Motorola made car charger with mini USB but I'm assuming its all the same voltages?

Anyone know?

they should be. the full specs are on wiki, they go into a lot of detail. I got one for my DS b/c its a US one and the voltage is different here, so the wallcharger didn't work.

It should be. The actual "adapting" happens in the "wall-wart" for most of these things. USB carries a standard voltage.

Yes. You don't see USB stuff sold in 2 types: US and Europe, do you?

    ^ no you dont.

but the point was to discover whether USB was only standardized in interface/plug OR if that included the voltage carried as well.

like how you can purchase universal car charges, and have several voltages mixed with any one of several plug types.

Well, USB is specced to have a constant voltage (+5V, IIRC), though the voltage can vary depending on how many devices are pulling on the system.

No, they're not all the same. It can vary, especially if you're charging off of a computer, which won't even provide ample power to the device without a driver. I think it is pretty close, though.
I've got a Motorola charger and a Blackberry charger, both of which use mini USB. The Motorola charger will charge the Blackberry fine, but the blackberry charger will not charge my Motorola. I'll have to see if I can find my Blackberry charger around to see what the message was that I get on my phone if I try to use it, but it's something about how it won't charge. I will also say that the moto charger seems to charge my Blackberry a little faster than normal, so I'm not sure if it's even healthy :)

I don't believe it - I'm on my THIRD PS3, and my FIRST XBOX360. What the heck?

Yeah, USB has a standard voltage. There will be a 12-5v converter on the line somewhere. You should be ok.

Not all devices that charge through a USB port charge using USB voltage. Some are simply able to connect to a computer via USB but still need a special charger. It’s sort of stupid but I guess it saves space.
