How to get medical and cash assistance in the state of Washington:

I lost my job on March 1 this year because of post-traumatic stress disorder. I can't work until I recover, and I can't recover without professional help. Now, I've at least got the medical and financial assistance I need to see my health care providers, get the drugs I need, and the money for gas to get to these places.

Step 1: Go to your local Department of Social and Health Services and get an application for general assistance, or call them and have one mailed to you. Look in the telephone book blue pages for the number.

Step 2: Fill out the application and return it in person to the DSHS office. Schedule and appointment for an interview regarding your medical and financial status.

Step 3: Show up for your interview. Be thorough in answering the questions posed. The more information you give the state employees the more likely they are to approve you for assistance. The people I spoke with were genuinely interested in my well-being and weren't doing their jobs because they pay well.

Step 4: Wait. It can take up to 45 days to get the snail-mail acceptance/rejection letter. Calling doesn't help.

Step 5: If you are approved, go back to the DSHS office and get your state debit card and medical coupon (and possibly your food assistance card). When deciding which medical professionals to see, make sure to ask if their office will accept a state medical coupon for payment.

It's a pretty easy process, but if you don't know how to start it might as well be a Gordian knot. In my case I get $206 a month for expenses and full medical/prescription coverage. If I need it, I can get housing, utilities, phone, and food assistance. If you need help because you can't work, go get help. It's not hard.
