Buying an unlocked phone

Hello all,

I'm moving back to Canada from the UK soon, and so I'm going to need to get a new cell phone. I currently have a blackberry with the company I work for, so I can't take that with me.

Now, I'd ideally like the Sony Ericsson w810i, but I notice that:

a) Only Rogers Wireless (Canadian Cell phone provider) seems to offer this phone
and
b) I can find it cheaper, unlocked, on Ebay

Now, I've never done anything like this before, but if I buy it unlocked on Ebay, do I just stroll into Rogers Wireless and have them provide a SIM Card for me? I'm not entirely sure how this works out.

Secondary topic: anyone have any experiences with the w810i? I really want a decent phone with camera/mp3/bluetooth, so this seems to suit me well.

I own the w810. BTW i/c is really negligible; they're essentially the same phone, but 'i' is what it's called for the Americas, Europe, etc.

I don't use the bluetooth, but:

-Buttons are raised and slightly separated... awesome for typing.

    -Battery life is fantastic.

-Camera is awesome if used in good lighting (built in AF).

-At 'fine' setting video is sufficient (obviously not 'great', but it's not awful... again in decent lighting, with a
steady hand, 'good' video is available).

    -Bright, clear display.

-Pretty good built in music software... only problem is sometimes it takes a couple of extra keystrokes to do simple things.

-Offered in white! Looks fantastic if you like to try being daringly stylish. I have black and am pleased with the looks.

-Uses Memory Stick Duo. 2GB chips are easily grabbed for 60 bucks or less.

Excellent. Thanks for the review. I have a spare 4 gig memory Stick Pro Duo, as I just upgraded to an 8 gig one for my PSP.

As for the phone itself, I'm looking to spend around $250CAD/$230USD
