360 Controller + XP = Woes Aplenty

Howdy H/A. I've been using Microsoft's wired 360 controller on my computer for a good long while now. I was filled with glee upon hearing that Geometry Wars had been released over Steam, as I assumed the controller/game combo would be much like the console experience I love so dearly. As luck would have it, this very moment was chosen by my computer to start some funny business, namely a weird audio stuttering whenever I plugged the gamepad in. I had been using Microsoft's old drivers and later XBCD, so I uninstalled everything that I had related to the issue and reinstalled MS's newest drivers. I now get no response at all from the controller; it doesn't show up in the Control Panel list of game controllers. In my Device Manager there's an entry for the controller, but it displays this error message when I check the properties: "Windows cannot initialize the device driver for this hardware. (Code 37)". I've uninstalled the device manually through the Device Manager, but that doesn't seem to do any good. I am now rather at my wit's end, and would appreciate any and all advice. Thanks!

Are you installing the drivers as per the directions on this page http://support.microsoft.com/kb/906347 ?
mainly installing the drivers (after you've uninstalled them and restarted your computer to make sure they're completely gone) before connecting the controller to your PC?

Yeah, that's how I went about it. I think the problem is that there are files or registry keys or something left over from before.
