I want to buy an iPod. Don't shove Zunes or whatever at me, I want a new iPod. However, I realize its been a year since the 80gig video came out (or something like that.) what's the word on a new version coming out?

They've been talking about touchscreen iPods for years, but it looks like the iPhone is it. No idea what the next-gen iPods would bring, maybe just an iPhone without the phone. After having released a device like that, no one's going to want to buy a small screen. I have a 2nd-gen Nano. You're guaranteed to have them in style or whatnot for a while, they're going to stay small with little screens, the only upgrades being bigger capacities and such.

The iPhone is the new iPod.

IMHO, best money is on a Nano, they are small, sleek, and will do pretty much anything you want.

It wouldn't surprise me if they release the next gen iPod this holiday season to be honest. I really can't see them putting all there effort into the iPhone when it will only be available to those with Cingular.. At&t whatever it is called now. I don't doubt them putting a lot of effort into the iPhone of course, but to not release a new iPod with touchscreen is pretty dumb, I think.

I don't have a shit load of a music, but my current Mini is at capacity at 4 gigs already. I know I need more than that but 30 and 60 seem like too much. Halp.

30 and 80 are the current iPod capacities.

    Is 30 really too small?

I have a 30GB Zune, and the majority of the space on it is taken up by videos.

I didn't say too small, I said too big.

I kind of want an iPhone considering I'd get the new phone I need and the new iPod, but... I don't want to pay for the fucking data package.

Maybe, but I don't really see myself watching a whole lot of video. I don't travel a whole lot and any other time if I wanted to watch something I'd be where I could.

i cant say anyone knows when the new version might come out. there's the macrumors buyer's guide.. and the ipod and nano has been at it's current stage for soooo long. it's possible they might release something after the iphone.. and it's also possible they'll wait until after the student promo (buy a mac get an ipod free) to end and then release the new ipod in time for xmas season

i would just recommend getting a refurbed nano from apple's website. i got a 4gb for 129 and it's the same as a brand new one

How is the iPhone? I really need a new phone and god knows I could stand to replace my old mono screen 10gig iPod but should I just get a good phone now that does proper internet browsing and wait for the next gen iPods or wait for the iPhone to launch in the UK?

Is there supposed to be a higher-capacity Shuffle coming out sometime? It's still at 1gb, I'm hoping for 2gb or 4gb at some point, in the same form factor with the clip. I know they added a few different colors a while ago, all still 1gb.

well from rumors around the internet..

it should be fine for a phone. it should be a better ipod.. though it's limited in capacity since it's flash.

the internet browsing is good if you have wifi you can connect to, but the 2g/edge/whatever-it's-called speed of att's network sucks for internet since it's slow (no idea how this is with uk's carriers)

it's pretty pricey at 600 for the phone, plus phone plan, plus data plan.. all this with a 2 yr contract required

While I adore my Shuffle and totally want more space...

How the hell am I going to navigate 4gb without a screen? They made the thing awesome, clip and all. But the size doesn't lend itself well to navigation, which doesn't lend itself to much more than 1gb.

I'm sure they've got their team working on this very issue!

A shuffle with a small LED screen would definitely be nice.

That'll be the critical issue when it's launched in the UK. We usually get good discounts on the handsets over here, with the basic models being free with a cheap contract.

For example, you can get a Blackberry 8800 for free on a pay monthly line rental of £40 a month which include 400 mins of calls & 500 texts a month (plus entry into a Justin Timberlake tickets prize draw, wouldn't you know).

You can also get MP3 player phones for free on similar deals. So logically the Apple iPhone is going to need to be available for free or cheap (Say £50-£100 max) for it to be competitive, although i guess it's desirability may allow it to get away with a high ask price.

yeah, in the US, we have a bunch of phones for free with any phone plan. they're not too amazing, but they make phone calls fine. the razr is now free, the chocolate is buy one get one free, all these so called wonder phones are now gratis after being out on the market for so long. the way that they are hyping the iphone is that it's not going to come down for a long time because of the exclusivity with the carrier (at&t). carriers are used to so much power and att actually gave apple concessions so that apple would stay exclusive with at&t. i dont see the price of the iphone coming down anytime within the next year, but it's rumored that there would be iphone nano (so to speak of a cheaper version) and 2nd gen iphones coming out soon after the 1st gen

There are only 3 service plans with the iPhone, $60, $80 and $100 dollars, all for 2 years. All have unlimited data, only difference is minutes and night/weekend minutes, then you got the 500 or 600 phone on top of that. linky

I wouldn't expect a touch screen ipod for at least a year, why on earth would apple risk cannibalizing iPhone sales by releasing that so soon? Also note that you can't use an iphone without a service plan.
