I did a few searches, and didn't come up with anything. Plus, this looks fairly recent.

So, it seems some guys got together with an idea for a project. Their goal is to recreate the original story of Super Mario Brothers into a more realistic concept.
The I, Mario project is an attempt at re-imagining the events of the game Super Mario Bros. in a less carefree, more realistic setting.

History: This project was started on the OCRemix forums by Shael Riley. People started posting ideas and concept art there, and the idea grew to an enormous extent. A Yahoo group was formed for discussion on this, as well as an archive for concept art and, much later, this forum. At the initial time of writing, this was the most popular thread on the OCremix forums, surpassing every other thread in terms of number of times viewed (over 150,000!) Unfortunately, since then the thread has died. You can find an incomplete archive of it under the topic LINKS! in the Important Announcements forum.

Goal: This project aims to expose all the strange things in the Mario universe that would be freaky and unnatural in a realistic setting. It uses the original Super Mario Brothers as a setting and basic story, but borrows elements from the other Mario games. It shows how Mario would react to being in the Mushroom Kingdom if he wasn't accustomed to fighting giant mutated turtles and talking to mushrooms, but was instead an ordinary, down-on-his-luck plumber who suddenly arrived in a strange, horrific new world. It explores the only genre that Nintendo has never put Mario in: Survival Horror.

Story: the story is based on the original Super Mario Bros. It starts off with Mario being transported via the sewer system to the Mushroom Kingdom, and then continues on through. Mario learns of Princess Peach, who has an uncanny resemblance to Mario's deceased girlfriend, Pauline, and who has also been kidnapped. He then must reach Bowser's Fortress and rescue her.

Gameplay: Mario, once in the Mushroom Kingdom, is 'unexplainedly' able to jump higher than usual. In addition, he must use his wrench and other tools as weapons to survive. In the Mushroom Kingdom, he also finds mushrooms which contain a strong hallucinogen that makes him temporarily stronger.

The concept sounds really cool, but there's the possibility of a cease and desist order, and of course always a good chance of vapor ware syndrome.

Here's a link to their boards. I haven't found a more official site yet.

They will get a cease and desist if they put forth news releases like this on the internet before they have anything done. :( They need to be like that Mario Forever game and come out of no where with a nearly finished product.

Using words like "unexplainedly" seems odd. Isn't the point to explain these things?

The other day, I was thinking that it would be pretty cool to have a re-imagining of the first Megaman game as told in the songs by The Protomen. Not really as official canon or a revival of the series, just as an interesting take on the subject material, since the plot is largely ignorable in its current form.

Nothing to do with Mario, but this seemed like a fitting place for it. Honestly, though, this just reminds me of that horrible "realistic" mario artwork floating around the net.

I'm pretty sure we did indeed have a thread about this a while back. It's a really, really old project. Personally, I like the idea, as long as it's done tastefully, but I know a lot of people hate it.

Not at all, really. The point is more, as they said, to create a survival-horror experience by using a more realistic setting, but keeping the idiosyncrasies of the Mario universe intact. Imagine being a normal human being who's suddenly been given the ability to jump six times his own height and throw into a world of flame-breathing carnivorous plants and walking, fanged mushrooms. Think of it as American McGee's Super Mario Brothers. The point isn't to explain the physics of the Mario universe; it's to make something totally creepy with the Mario Universe.

I used to be part of the project when it started up, but the really slow pace of content generation got to me and I just stopped visiting the forums. Seems like they've got... a small demo for a year or two of work. About what I'd expect. It's more of a thought exercise than a full-scale mod project, in my opinion, but if anyone from the team wants to correct me I'd be happy to be wrong.

    This story reminds me this.

And also, the fanart that came out of that (I take credit for none of it):

i like how the one pic of mario has him wearing kuribo shoes.

also, does the plot of this realistic game kind of remind anyone of Silent Hill 2? From the angle of the dead girlfriend part any everything

Man that movie was awesome. I saw it when I was like 6 or 7 and I thought it was the best thing since the Power Rangers.

I actually don't want to see it again in fear that it would crush this nostalgic feeling.

Mainly because people on them don't tend to feel pain or exhibit any sense of self presevation.

Heh, in that manner, "unexplainedly" would pretty much cover every aspect of the original games/setting and allow them to flaunt them as being realistic.

...and what the hell is with those pictures. Seriously.
