Well, I typically found that dodging worked much better than blocking. Once I learned how to duck and weave around the AI's punches, I found the game quite easy, to be honest. It's much easer to lean to the side in that game than it is to directly block, in my experience. Though, once you pick up the dodging, the blocking is a natural extension of that.

whoah, i'm getting this game like.. tomorrow, when play get my order here. I've been playing the demo against my brother, we're totally hooked. And i need to practice on the punches, so i can be a precision demon with them.
edit: yes, i get in close and hold down left trigger for dodge, then just sway away like crazy with the left stick, while whipping the right one around for punches to counter his. Also, never do what i do, and watch your own character. It's the first thing anyone needs to do, but learn to watch your opponent (i think i'm just retarded. That or vain)

Or distracted by the shiny sweat and amazing textures. (Yes I've done it too).

that said, i am very impressed by the texture work (on the 360 at least). The animation's good, too, but i think it could really benefit from the Natural Motion euphoria/endorphin (whichever one it is) stuff that LucasArts are using, for blending them. That would just make it infinity times smoother.
You know, I really wish I could help you. I am really, really good at FNR 3. Me and my friends played it for a couple months straight, and I went from getting my ass kicked(because my friend was the one who owned it, and got to regularly play it), to being pretty much undefeatable. But its just hard for me to explain. I do a crap load of jabs mostly, with a few haymakers just because people don't expect them from me regularly. Flash KO's are especially nice.
i find that my jabs never actually seem to have much power. Just pushing the right stick diagonally up (left or right) is all i should be doing, right? I seem to have some of the more powerful punches figured out (quarter and half-circles seem to do it)
Jabs aren't about having power. Its about throwing hundreds of jabs, and your opponent wondering where his health went when he wasn't getting uppercutted/etc.
an interesting strategy. I suppose it could just be because i tend to punch myself out (at least i did), that when i finally thought "oh yeah, jabs", it'd look more like my boxer was trying to remove an eyelash from the other guy, than wound him.
It's a learning curve you'll have to overcome. If you get good at it you can beat almost everyone without any effort, but it does require precise timing and knowing exactly what to do. I really love the game; my main problem is that it lacks depth to warrant extended play, but it's certainly not easy to master, and it offers you a lot of options with the basic mechanics depending on how far you want to take it.
There aren't a lot of faults with the gameplay. They could improve on the mechanics, and add some more strategy, but the core game is there, and it's fucking excellent. Too bad the experience is bogged down by the incredibly obtuse EA menu system.

All creature will die and all the things will be broken. That's the law of samurai.
Any tips on keeping stamina? I hardly seem to throw more punches than my opponent but I'm always shot by the end of the match. A few times I've only won because I managed to knock them out in the last round with a desperate shot

I love this game but I'm not particularly good at it, even after hundreds of fights.
Making stunning likenesses of your friends and having them duel to the death is a special kind of pleasure not found in too many other places.
The singleplayer AI is retardedly easy but it does train your basic reactions against human players.
When I beat the career mode I was at 59-0 with a heavyweight. I didn't even use any of the best styles, either. The opponent's stats don't scale quickly enough to make them a challenge once you start to improve, unfortunately.
If you're having trouble beating AI fighters, pick Fast as your style. It's easy mode, basically. You can land five punches in a combo. Even worse, pick Judge Jab, where your jabs (though a tiny bit slower than Fast's) do about as much as an uppercut . That style's why Ali is retardedly good in this game.
One thing of note is that parries are incredibly hard to do at the start, and you have to actually practice using them to get any better. Try them during fights even if it gets you pounded. It's very satisfying to parry a haymaker and then slam him in the face with your own.

You can get some practice with it in on the computer, depending on the level of difficulty they telegraph their punches a bit.
