It should get here on Wednesday. I ordered it (60GB model) off eBay for about $500. It comes with Motorstorm, Tony Hawk's Project 8 (which I will sell), Superman Returns Blu-Ray, a Blu-Ray Remote, and about 7 or 8 PSN games installed.
Now, I have some questions.
My TV is a value-brand 27" LCD which is able to get 720p/1080i resolution. What resolution is going to be my best bet for the PS3? Since my TV wont get 1080p, will it still upscale old games and movies to 720p?
I have PS2 component cables that aren't made by Sony, will these work?
Finally, what games/Blu-Ray movies/PSN games would you recommend? I just reserved Ninja Gaiden Sigma, and I am probably going to download flOw (yay!), Gripshift, and Super Stardust HD.
Thanks :P

I'd go with 720p, as all PS3 (BD-ROM) games run at that resolution, whereas not all support 1080i (You may however which to switch it to 1080i for Blu-Ray movie playback). With the latest firmware, it will indeed upscale DVDs and old PS1/PS2 games to either resolution. Any Sony-compatible component cable will work, as it uses the same video jack Sony has used for years now.
As to games I would recommend, well I'd say Resistance or perhaps The Darkness if you like shooters. Motorstorm is a lot of fun and very pretty, though strictly an arcade racer. Virtua Fighter 5 is great if you like fighters, and Oblivion is a must-buy if you haven't played it on another system.
Ninja Gaiden is going to rock. :^:. flOw is not for everyone, but I enjoyed it, and Gripshift is a solid choice. Let's see...as far as movies go, I really like Tim Burton's Corpse Bride for its picture quality, and the Prestige and the Pirates movies look great as well. Hope that helps!

Unless you have it for another system/ don't like skating games.
As for games, Resistance seems to be the only must have for now, but you'd be remiss if you don't atleast rent Rainbow Six (Though it may be hard to find since it's coming out this week).
As far as retail games:
Resistance
Oblivion (If you don't have a decent PC)
MLB 07: The Show (If you're into baseball)
The Darkness is supposed to be awesome.
R6: Vegas (I believe that comes out this week)
Virtua Fighter 5
There's more, but I'm having a brainfart here.
Bluray movies are kind of hard to recommend. The Departed, Phone Booth and Ice Age 2 just b/c they're awesome movies. Also the Pirates movies are beautiful transfers, and are great for showing off your rig. I believe there is a bluray version of Planet Earth. I do not know the quality of the transfer, but even if it's average that will be beautiful.

Cool cool cool. Thanks!
I downloaded the Flash version of flOw for PC and LOVED it, very excited for that. Also, I've never played a Ninja Gaiden game in any form (Gasp! I know) so it'll be interesting to see if it will hold up to all the hype.
Thanks for the recommendations.

O my god Planet Earth I'm not sure I could handle it's epicness in HD haha.
All those games sound pretty good. Resistance, The Darkness, MLB 07: The Show, and Virtua Fighter 5 sound like my best bets...
I'll be sure to set up a JPN PSN account! Thanks.

Also, if your PS3 has any spare time, it would be appreciated if you spend that time folding for the Folding Arcadians, team 54717 8-)

Aside from that, I'd second everything mentioned here, and I'm getting R6 tomorrow. I'd go with The Fifth Element for BD. I read somewhere that Blockbuster is going to start exclusively supporting BD in their stores, so you might even be able to rent them soon.
Yes sir I will join with honor

I'd lime this, but I don't know how and I don't hate people that much. But Srsly, Planet Earth is the best thing ever in existence.
edit: Make sure you get the version narrated by david attenborough
As for movies, I'd buy whatever you want that you don't already have, and I'd re-buy any movies I already own that would be amazing in HD.
Definitely buy Planet Earth, I have it on HD-DVD and it's stunning.
I really need to pick up Planet Earth. I keep forgetting about it and then other stuff comes out and I buy that instead. The little of it I've seen in HD blew me away.

Really?
My understanding is that progressive scan is more important for fast moving stuff, whereas for displaying infomation or slow moving stuff resolution is more important.
Hmm...that makes sense to my stupid brain.
Yup, that's pretty accurate. Fast moving images look smoother at 720p, whereas still images with a lot of detail will look more sharp at 1080i. Some people can't tell the difference between them whatsoever, others endlessly obsess over which is better. Hopefully you're somewhere in the middle. (I'm an obsessive ).

I picked up resistance for a retail game and bought MKII and blast factor for PSN games.
I got it in anticipation of HOME, darkness, lair and all the other upcoming titles that im SUPER psyched about... its going to be a busy summer/winter for my PS3.
My only complaint is that my PS3 makes a horrendous very high pitched squealing.
it is not the fan it is not the dvd drive.. i know the sounds of these things.. what it sounds like is a resistor or a MOSFET kinda noise.. anyone that knows about RC cars and the noise the speed control makes.... its REALLY similar to that sound.. actually.. i'm gonna make a inquiry to sony right now.
anyone else have that bad sound?
Mine is very quiet. even when the fans kick into overdrive I don't hear a squealing sound. I'd give sony a call and see what they say.

but besides that GTHD is sweet for what it is and i'm really excited about the future games
As far as resolution goes, I think you will need to have 1080i enabled if you want to watch some content in 720p. I was using 720p at first on a previous TV, and when I put in Blu-ray movies, it would only display at 480p. It frustrated me to no end, until I read that it won't downscale to 720p unless a 1080 resolution is chosen as one of your supported resolutions.
Also, Rainbow 6: Vegas finally came out today, and it's actually a bit better than the 360 version, which is my favorite 360 game. It comes with teh maps from both expansions on XBL, and it actually has a better draw distance. I'm going to do a side-by-side comparison tonight though to find out exactly what the differences are.
sleepykisses:
Your LCD's Native resolution is 720p, so use that. Most LCD's that accept 1080i signals downsample the image to 720p anyway, and the picture degrades because of it. Yes, any PS2 component cables will work just fine. Since teh last update, the PS3 will convert all of your games, Blu Ray, and DVD's to 720p instead 480p, so you're all set. Now if they can just get 720p-only games to upconvert to 1080i, we'd be golden.
For games, my favorites right now are:
Calling All Cars (if you plan to play online)
Rainbow 6: Vegas
Resistance
Motorstorm
Virtua Fighter 5
Tekken 5: DR
MLB 07: The Show (my favorite baseball game of the last 5 years)
Warhawk (I'm addicted to the Beta)
flOw is quite cool, and better than I expected it to be. Gripshift is very pretty, but not my type of game. Super Stardust HD looks incredible, and I am definitely buying it.

Also, Ninja Gaiden is going to kick your ass and make you cry, and you will love every second of it.

I picked up R6 Vegas this afternoon, and I've played the 360 version somewhat extensively so I'd be happy to give you a rundown on how the PS3 version is later, if you'd like. I'm not sure why they had the delay either, but I do know that it includes all the content from the 360 DLC map packs, so that's nice.

I know I'd like to hear a comparison, if it's not too much trouble. I've played some of the PC version, and have been thinking about getting the PS3 version if it's a good port.
I'm looking for info on performance (framerate, any obvious glitches) compared to the 360 version. My PC is decent, but not quite up to snuff to run R6V at full settings at my monitors native res.
So yeah, some comparisons would be great!
XBL: UnderHero5
Steam/PSN: UnderHero5
I wouldn't say "must." I mean, I rented it for the 360 and couldn't stand it. It was just so awkward and clumsy.
Its not that good a game if you ignore the relative open endedness. 8000 oblivion gates consisiting of about 3 maps, dungeons that all look the same even if they are shaped different, terrible levelling and lack of variety in armour and weapons can't be overcome even by hte Dark Brotherhood.
Alright, played it for a while. Short version: It's a competent port with some minor technical niggles.
Longer version: The framerate is mostly smooth. The load times are about the same as on 360. Graphically, it's different. The textures, shadowing, models, and animations are all the same. The lighting is quite a bit different. It's much less bloomy. I'm not sure if this was due to technical constraints, or if they decided they liked the look of it better. It gives everything a much crisper, more realistic look, as opposed to the surreal soft look of the 360/PC version. I'm not sure which look I like better. At first I was like, meh, but then it grew on me.
There are also a few sound issues. The main one is that when your squadmates talk, it only comes through Logan's headset, not their mouths. Meaning if you're right next to them, it sounds a little strange. Probably just a bug. The sound also sounds remixed slightly, the guns don't quite have the punch that they do on the 360 and the video window sound is pretty loud. (The window that pops up in the HUD). You could probably adjust this using the in-game sound sliders.
Multiplayer seems to work well, I hopped into a game for a bit. All the creation stuff is there, sans camera support. The extra maps/content from the DLC packs on 360 are there.
Overall, it's a solid port of a great game with a different style of lighting. Hope that helps! I'd be curious to hear more from torgo as well. I think the increased draw distance torgo mentioned earlier is partially a function of the bloom lighting being toned down. It does help for certain long-range shooting scenarios.

Oblivion (must play for RPG fans...well, open ended RPG fans)
Virtua Fighter 5 is a must for fighting game fans
Motorstorm which you're getting is 6 flavors of awesomesauce
Resistance is a must buy as well.
Those are 5 of the 6 games I own so far. I own Genji as well and I'm probably the only person in the world who actually really liked it. I enjoyed it thoroughly, but I won't suggest it since I'd probably be shot in the process.
Yeah, I got a PS3... it's kind of sitting there right now. Admittedly I've been really busy with work. I bought Motorstorm, but it couldn't really hold my interest. I think for that kind of game, it's Burnout for me.
I was never really good enough at Virtua Fighter to warrant a purchase, especially at that price.
What I would recommend is putting Shadow of the Colossus in there. It doesn't fix everything, but it's uprezed, cleaner, and smoother. The most fun PS3 experience yet.
