Ugh, so I've decided to get the hell out of Perth while I still can and head back to Melbourne. I dont want to die in this hellhole! Of course, it doesnt help that I've accumulated a mountain of junk while I've been living here.

I'm going to be getting rid of as much as I can, but I still see myself hanging on to quite a few items that will be bulky.

Probably a few suitcases of clothes
My desktop computer... will probably just take the tower and dump the CRT here.
Wii
And the worst will be boxes and boxes of documents, folios and books. Curse you, hardcopy media!

I'm not really sure where to start... but I'm trying to throw out stuff that's too battered, sell what I can, and take the rest with me. I'm not sure how I'm going to do the last one either. I've had a few people recommend excess air baggage, but I've no idea how that works. Somehow I've got to get all this accomplished in a month and a bit. Doable, but intimidating looking.

So... any advice on how I'm going to get this done?

Joke's on you, my chairs are made out of milkcrates. (lies, they just come with the apartment. They're stll horrible though.)

Garage sale did cross my mind, but I currently live in a 5th floor unit. I dont want to invite people into my squalid place.

curses! Um. The people living in the flats near me seem to have no trouble holding their garage sales on the front lawn of the apartment. Get a couple of mates together to help you shift the gear and keep an eye on it, and you should be fine. Best to check with your local council to see what their laws are on garage sales though. Some of them get narky about signage and things.

Have a stoop sale. You sell everything from the front of your building, not actually inside your apartment.

Those freeloaders? :X Still, it's an option I guess.

I'm still more worried about how I'm getting the remaining stuff off to Melbourne without paying through the nose for it.

Yeah, starting to sort out stuff that can be sold, stuff that cant and stuff friends have put dibs on, and what I'll take along.

I've gotten into the habit of unpacking as little as possible (being a college student, i've been in 3 different places in the last year). And each time I move I look at the boxes I never touched and send those back to my parents or take it to the salvation army (charity store).

This may not help you so much, but the general idea of looking at what you use and don't use often. I know I'm one of those packrat ppl who like to keep stuff just for sake of keeping it, so evaluating my stuff about every 6 months helps me greatly in keeping clutter down.
