Advice regarding alcohol....

I'm writing this in a state I wish not to be in....I'm drunk....again...I'm wasted on a weeknight considering using flex time to compensate for tomorrow. Is this a problem if it's never turned into a problem? I hope that makes sense. I look to H/A for advice because I believe someone here has to have dealt with a problem similar, and if not I'm content to write this to nobody in particular.....I work at an engineer firm and I know I'm not the first to come in hungover, but I do not want to be that guy...I don't want to be the person who has a problem, but in my line of work it would be an exception.... Yet that doesn't make it ok....H/A needed.....

TL:DR: I'm drunk and have done this before, is an imminent stop to drinking the only solution? Is the fact that I'm a social drinker a reasonable out?

    Most alcoholics are social drinkers.

If you're getting drunk on a weeknight and seriously considering coming to work hung over, yeah, that's a sign you might have a problem.

every person who doesn't like an acquired taste always seems to think everyone who likes it is faking it. it should be an official fallacy.

Correction, if you are getting drunk on a weeknight by yourself or if you feel that to have a good time you need alcohol ie. you can't just go out with friends and not drink while they drink. That is a sign of a problem.

Blowing off a little steam on a weeknight and coming in hungover occasionally isn't a cause of concern, it's how regular you are doing it which is.

Wait, you managed to log in the forum, find the right section, and make an almost typo-free post ? You're hardly drunk.

    Move along, move along...

alcoholism is a very serious problem to have, but it sounds like you're nowhere near it. if you're afraid of starting down the path to it (you havent yet, trust me), then cut down on your usage. nothing's wrong with having a couple drinks during the week, just be more responsible with the amount you drink and you'll be just like any other red blooded alcohol consuming person out there.

this all boils down to you and what you want to do. you dont have to stop drinking altogether, just be responsible for yourself. if you dont like feeling drunk (either during the week or even at all) then just dont get drunk. it sounds like you're at a stage when you can still get off that particular pony with ease.

i'm not saying to brush it off, because problems with alcohol dependency can quickly develop, but it doesnt seem like you have any more of a problem with drinking than any other casual/social drinker :)

just relax, if you dont want to get drunk during the week, then dont... if you want to go out and be social, then just have a couple or enough to get you up a little and then stop. you'll be alright.

Yeah, this is all going to depend on how often this happens, how much you can control your drinking, and whether you're drinking alone or with friends. Next time you're out, try slowing down.

Yeah, whether or not it's a problem is a very individual thing.

And don't trust any of those "are you an alcoholic?" tests put out by AA, MADD, and their ilk. I took a couple of those at one point, just for shits and giggles, and got "you are definitely an alcoholic (I answered eight questions as "yes" on a 20-question test for which 3 meant you were definitely an alcoholic)," and "you have a severe alcohol problem." Keep in mind that I was completely honest with the test, came out that solidly alcoholic, and hadn't had a drink in 6 months.

Yeah, getting drunk on a weeknight and missing work is a serious sign. How often have you done this? How many days a week do you get drunk?

More importantly, IMHO is how much are you drinking, when you drink?

One drink a night, every night isn't too bad. Some would even say its good.

Ten drinks 3 nights a week well, that's an issue.
