So I picked up EBA from that TRU Buy two DS games get one free, and I have to stay it's a great game. Although I really don't have any rhythm in me, so I am pretty much sucking it up when playing this game. But I'm still enjoying every moment of it.
I got all the way to the "last" stage (at least I think so) to where the agents get turned into stone, and they make a glorious comeback to a great song. But I can't get past the second "stage" of it.
Anyone here really good at the game? Any tips for playing?
What the fuck, makers of this game. The sad little girl song? Her dad died? Yeah, fuck you. Everything up until that point had been humorous and light-hearted and godamnit it's even sadder if you fuck up on the song.
Not much I can say in terms of tips, just keep trying, you will improve.
In the later difficulties of Canned Heat (the mission with the ninja), the beats in certain places (mostly the very beginning) don't follow the lyrics; they follow the bass instead. It might be frustrating at first, but that stage is now probably my favorite mission in the game.

That stage (on easy) was my only "good" stage, with a grade of B.
But man, I have that last stage music stuck in my head. I want to play it some more, but I don't think I can hurt my ego anymore tonight. Tomorrow, on the other hand...
practice makes perfect.
In a week you'll be chugging through the hard difficulty, a week after that the insane setting will be doable. you'll start s-ranking hard songs.
Then the urge for more sets in. You'll import ouendan 1 and 2 and be able to blaze through them in a couple days.

Aha! So that's what Ouendan is? I've heard that name around, and I (embarrassingly enough) didn't want to ask what exactly it was.

Yeah. Ouendan came out before EBA, and is better in some ways, but worse in others. Ouendan 2 is fairly new, I haven't even gotten around to importing it yet. I probably will in August.

Not really.
I already beat the regular campaign. Working on hard, but Jumpin' Jack Flash is just too damn hard...

It's seriously a finely crafted game.
The last song was a great choice, too.
Haha, that's awesome. Well... sorta. It's true. How about that?

Yeah, "Christmas Gift" is honestly one of my favourite pieces of videogame narrative ever. It's so perfectly set up by the rest of the game - it just blindsides you at a point where you're expecting killer robots and hyper-intelligent animals. I can't really compare it to the Ouendan ones - the language barrier dulls the effect of the sad ones there - though they're still quite good.
Totally made me all teary the first time I went through it. Perfect music selection for it as well.
i realize i should play the easy mode, and i will in the future, but is it "required" to unlock anything? i started off on normal mode, and did pretty well, then decided to move on to hard mode afterwards (the last song took me a while to beat as well). on gamefaqs i see that the highest rank is 80 MILLION!?! does that mean you're not missing any notes, and only getting a few "goods" on each song (high score is taking from each song right? regardless of skill level)?
completing every song on every difficulty level (including easy) does unlock a character to use.
The high score for rank is the sum of all your scores on each difficulty. Getting that final rank (approximately) requires a near perfect run on 80% of the hard/very hard songs. Perfect means keeping a combo through the whole song, not all 300s. your scores on easy/normal are much less significant.

Yeah, you need to beat every stage on every difficulty to unlock one thing.
The idea of hitting the 80 million mark is basically to perfect* as many stages on hard and very hard as you possibly can.
*Perfect here defined as no misses/uninterrupted combo throughout the song.
Beating Jumpin' Jack Flash on Sweatin' was one of my most extreme gaming moments ever.
THREE MONTHS of trying that song on-and-off, and when I finally get through that one hellish chain of notes I find myself blindsided by the final scene. So I limp through, get to the spinners and just go all-out on my DS screen.
I was stabbing the peace sign at my DS and shouting "HEY! HEY! HEY!" along with the game in the ending. I do not regret it.
EBA is my favorite handheld game of all time. I had beat every song on every difficulty except the last song on 4 stars. Then I started over on the R4 and I'm going through the last difficulty again. It's got real staying power and I will never get tired of the baseball level intro.
Also the guy that for some reason yells VULCANOOO!

That would be Leonardo da Vinci. I'm trying to think of any person in the history of forever less likely to be called "that guy". Coming up blank.
Also, I'm with you on Ouendan. Though I hear the menus are simple, the j-pop is a complete and total deal-breaker for me. It would be like an entire game made out of levels like the Material Girl level in EBA. Tolerable, even fun in really small doses because of the awesome game play but could turn horrible if I were forced through any more.
For the impaired: I am not comparing stylistically all of j-pop to Material Girl, I am comparing my enjoyment of the songs based on the giant youtube song lists I've perused to the enjoyment I get from Material Girl.
I enjoy Material Girl after dealing with the horrors or Skater Boy.
My favorite mission:
The baseball level. The story starts off seemingly normal...you're probably going to help this ex-baseball player train up to get back in the big leagues. And then...out of fucking NO WHERE..
FIRE BREATHING GOLEM
The song is fine until you actually pay attention to the lyrics. They are horrible, to put it kindly. It definitely tarnishes the level a bit, but the rest is awesome.

You bet kid!
Oh man, I was just coming here to post this, but you beat me to it. That was awesome.
Also, Material Girl was hardly the worst song in this game. Good Charlotte, Avril Lavigne, and Sum 41? Damn
I held off on buying this game for a long time when I found out how horrendous the song list was, but I finally gave in after playing a friend's copy. Still, though, was there ANYONE out there who wanted Good Charlotte in this game?
Really, it was just "HOTDOG = FOOTBALL" that sold me on it
I acquired this in the same manner as the OP. I'm not much of a rhythm game fan, but I'm actually enjoying it. Not sure if I'm in love with it yet, though. It's taking me a bit to get used to it because I keep expecting it to follow the beat instead of the vocals. As a rhythm game I was expecting the former instead of the latter. Ah well, something to get used to I suppose.

I've NEVER really enjoyed rhythm games, but damn... I'm having a blast with this.
I didn't want to fuck up on the kid stage, as I knew something bad would happen. :P

Now I get pissed when my very first run through a new song on very hard gets a "b".
And you should know that you MUST play all 4 difficulty levels in order to truly appreciate the game.
There are 3 bonus songs, did you know that?
No I didn't. I'll keep at it. I'll redo other songs and try to get a higher score.
My problem is that I hit the numbers WAY too early. And when I screw one button up, I'll end up screwing a few more up in the process of fixing it.

Yep. Found it. Undeniable proof.
then I went to canned heat, nailed the hard part and screwed up a simple slider. *hangs head in shame*
Eh, don't be too hard on yourself. I screw up on the carousel part of Jumpin' Jack Flash every time.
