This all looks well and good, but the question now becomes "what the hell is Sony going to do with it?" Obviously it’s not to try and out sell the N-gage, that would just be silly. That’s like getting excited about beating a retarded six year old at chess. No, it’s clear that Sonys feels have been hurt about being beat by Nintendo time and time again.
By all rights the PSP
should be the dominating hand held system on the market today, but the DS has far surpassed the PSP in popularity simply because Nintendo knows what the point of a hand held system is. Contrary to Sony's beliefs, a portable gaming system isn't meant for some one to "get their game on", it's to pass time while you’re waiting in line, sitting at a red light, or listening to some very uninteresting person talk about them selves. Instead of creating their own versions of great pass time games like Tetris and Pokeman (pretty much the only kinds of game people play on their DS), Sony spent time developing games like GTA: Liberty City Stories, Mettle of Honor, and RRIIIIIIIIIIGGGGGGGGEEEEEEE RACER! Is it a surprise to any one but Sony that the movies are the best selling item for the PSP.
So like I said, it's going to be interesting to see if Sony can get its head out of its ass to develop an actually
useful hand held gaming system. Though I fear that will be a wait for a long train commin’.
I have to say though; my experiences with Sony-Ericsson phones have be fantastic. So even if it’s not a great portable system, it’ll still be a great phone that just so happens to have a crappy game on it.

Why should the PSP be the dominant hand-held?
Also, I find the rotating screen thing to be retarded. Why doesn't anyone make a nice-looking phone that's just a phone?

cell phone with basic crap video games is ok.
psp with phone capabilities? seems too much like the ngage to me.
the spin thing is pretty dumb as well.
maybe a slide thing would work better. who knows.
perhaps that's just me.
Seems like people are trying to make things do too much shit nowadays.
I bought a video game system. I don't need to make calls on it.
I don't need my car to make me delicious cookies either.
wait. yes i do.
Somebody doesn't own a DS! Or is at least missing out on a wide array of games...
I do see your point though.

Fixed.
First the spinning screen thing is dumb all on its own. Second, if you play a game with the screen rotated like that you're cramping your hands together on what looks like a pretty small control surface. Are there shoulder buttons in such a configuration? Where would they be?

I wouldn't play it like shown. I would flip it right around putting the keypad on the top. Tilt the thing on the side and tada.

I hear it has two screens!
That was part of it's original purpose. I mean extra purposes in the sense of something added in that is not essential to the machine. For example, the ability to play PS2 games on the PSX that Sony released a while ago. The ability to play the games was mostly just added in so they could call it a Playstation. The ability to play those games had little to do with the main function of the rest of the machine. You could easily take out that extra purpose and the rest of the functionality would be unchanged. The DS couldn't have a screen removed because it is an essential part of playing DS games.
Anyway, if they can keep it down to the size of a real phone, and give it away for free with a plan, I would consider getting one when my current phone's plan is up.
That’s cool if most of you out there still enjoy lugging around three or four devices during your daily walkabouts, but personally the idea of having my cell phone, PDA, mp3 player, mobile internet and game system in one nifty keen device makes me salivate.
What we need to face is whether or not we like it, each new jump in portable technology brings us closer to one small device that can do everything. If we don’t accept this inevitable forward progression, then we’ll be left in the technological dust like previous generations. (no one wants that to happen to them. do you remember the look on your granpartents faces when you tryed to explain the internet to them for the first time?)

Look for us in the pink at PAX '08!
Me too, so much more value per pickpocketry.
I've never owned a Sony game(ing) product, but I'm pretty sure that PS2 thingy did pretty well.

No.
No no no no.
Just... No...
It was stupid then, it is stupid now.
2) Unless you can come up with some sort of evidence for this bizarre assertion, I'm calling bullshit. I've heard nothing but crap about UMD movie sales.
The problem with a generalized device rather than a specialized one is that instead of doing one thing really well, you tend to get a device that does many things, but does a mediocre job at all of them.
Also, what the hell is a "mobile internet"? I can only assume you were adding Internet connectivity to the list since that isn't strictly necessary to a PDA or cellphone, even though they almost all have it these days.
Edit: Man, I just noticed all the stupid in the first post. You think Sony developed GTA, Medal of Honor and Ridge Racer?

But do you have a cellphone that is also a video game system, mp3 player, video player, and meat tenderizer?
I THOUGHT NOT
But does it clean floors AND is a dessert topping?

I am just about the biggest DS fanboy you could ever find, and I find NOTHING wrong with the bolded statement. On paper the PSP has everything. Beautiful screen, near PS2 quality graphics, excellent sound, the backing of Sony. In fact, the real reason the PSP isn't the clear winner of the portable market is the same strange reason all the other Gameboy competitors failed; it's too much too soon. Long load times, short battery life, weird design. If the self same PSP came out two years from now, using memory cards for faster load and longer battery, two analog nubs, better placed buttons, something to protect the screen it would be amazing. Instead we have the very good but flawed PSP we have today. Another drawback to being so close in spec to a console is that the system sees a lot of direct console ports. Normally I am all for this on portables, but the increased load times on these sorts of games plus the short battery life means that I usually just decide to get any given game for the PS2 instead, sometimes waiting months for a better version to come out on the PS2.
That PSP should be dominating, but not real life's PSP.
See, the thing is, you're talking about two years from now. The PSP wasn't released two years from now, it was released two years ago. So in reality, no, Sony chose the wrong time for it, thus it didn't deserve it.
Now, perhaps in two years, when a new PSP (and probably a new DS) are released, we'll talk.
The PSP in its current form had a lot going for it at launch. Sleek, great games, can watch movies/listen to music on it. It also ran smack into the worst batch of DS games. If it had actually come out face to face against the DS that holiday season and had kept the great launch software it might have overcome a lot of its flaws back then.
The sad and funny thing is that the PSP now has the software to make it a great seller, and its price is a lot more reasonable, but the momentum behind the DS is too damn great.
See, and maybe I'm just weird, but I read that as "If the PSP were completely different it would be dominating the market." The fact of the matter is that it _shouldn't_ be dominating for just the shortcomings you mention and perhaps a few more.
You can't say that just because some of the parts are technically superior the entire package is better.

What am I supposed to top my deserts with when this all in one wonder device breaks or I lose it?
Was this quote from:
A) Sony
2) Sega
D) Atari
4) Nokia
J) Lots and lots and lots of companies.
Competing with Nintendo in portables is like invading Russia in the winter.
I don't remember the Game Gear being much more expensive than the Game Boy, though the other criticisms are certainly valid (especially size and battery life).
The Gameboy was 90 dollars at the time while the Game Gear was 150 dollars.

If this is a joke, why am I not laughing?
Man what? Sony dominated the market for two entire generations, and we're not far enough into this one to decide any sort of winner. The only time Nintendo has beaten Sony is in handhelds.
But you know what? Both the PSP and DS have Wifi, speakers, and a microphone. I would probably pay full game price for a Skype cartridge/disc, especially if it still functioned in sleep mode. That's about all I want as far as phone capabilities on my DS goes.
