My girl is looking for an MP3 player. But she has specific requests.

1) Around 30GB
2) Easy to use
3) Playlists
4) Will allow easy import of any MP3's she has. Especailly all th eones she ripped from her CD's.

The latter is the biggie. She has a huge collection of MP3's already. And doesn't want to do a bunch of techno mumbo jumbo to transfer them. Now, me, I love me some techno mumbo jumbo...but she doesn't want to have to depend on me for that (should I be worried about that?).

So, let me have it!

Err, pretty much all of them, ever?

But out of those, I'd go for the iPod.

But I heard that you had to fiddle with the ipod to get it to work with non itunes mp3's/ Not true?

Bollocks. Just drop them onto the icon / into the player itself.

They need to have their tags and such sorted, but that isn't a big deal at all.

Wait, what? No. You need to use iTunes to import songs to an iPod, you can't just toss them onto the player like it's a USB Mass Storage Device. That's exactly what this person is trying to avoid!

    The Zune.

It meets all your standards. When you install the zune program, it will ask you where you have your music, the search that folder, and upload it to your zune when you connect it to your pc.
    Pretty painless process.

I meant the player as in the player window. Oops.

She wants to avoid "techno mumbo jumbo". If a one-time drag and drop of the folder she has all her ripped mp3s in onto the iTunes window following which her collection will forever after be automagically synced with her mp3 player is to complex for her, there is literally nothing on the market which will meet her needs.

Perhaps she wants to avoid having to install yet another goddamn program to use her new music player? I know it bugs the hell out of me when every piece of hardware I buy needs to have its own fucking software suite.

So did she rip her CDs to MP3? What program did she use?

Another vote for Zune... the software will know where your music is

It sounds like she wants something that she can just plug in and it works. In that case you'll probably want to go with either the iPod or the Zune; both have their own proprietary software, but once it's installed it'll seek out your music and install it and from there it's pretty idiot-proof. Both will read vanilla MP3s just fine. Personally I find iTunes bloaty but great to use, whereas the Zune software is bloaty and a piece of shit to use, but likely she won't care about loading times or anything.

Does she buy music online at all, or will she want to? Then she may want to look and see if she likes the offerings of the iTunes Store or the Zune Store (or whatever they called it.) Also, what does she use to rip her CDs now? She can use either the Zune or iTunes interface to do that from now on, plus iTunes at least (can't speak for Zune) automatically organizes all of the files so that you don't have to dick around in folder hierarchies.

This sounds exactly like my wife; she generally hates technology. She wants to turn it on and have it work; she has an iPod now with a few songs on it, but she doesn't even have most of her CDs ripped, so once we have our home office set up I'm going to rip all her CDs for her and then she can just plug in the iPod and it all seamlessly updates from there.

Thanks for all the replies. I think she has decided on a zune, simply for the fact that it was cheaper where she went for the same capacity.

Good choice! The software is pretty easy to use for what you want and the Zune Marketplace with the Zune Pass is just sublime!
