VAIO Laptop LCD problems

I received a malfunctioning VAIO FE550G laptop a couple of weeks ago. The problem with it is that it turns on but the LCD remains a white color. I tried attaching my LCD to the laptop through a DVI port, but I can't seem to change the display from the laptop to the external monitor. I've ordered a replacement LCD for the laptop (a bargain at $102.50) but I'm worried that if it's not the LCD, that it'll be the onboard controller. All help would be appreciated. Thanks.
