Since it's looking like there's a chance this forum will be merged with WoW, I made a search guide to help people find the information they're looking for with the increased forum activity.
The biggest mistake people make is assuming computers are smart.
Wrong. Computers are stupid.
Many people think a query like "What is the maximum DPS for so-and-so with x stats?" will net usable results. Bzzt! Computers are stupid. You need to dumb it down so they can understand it.
Your search query should come in 4 parts:
The subject: WoW, CoV, CoH, etc.
A verb/verbs: calculating, finding, defeating, etc.
Improper noun(s): DPS, dungeon, map, arena, etc. Multi-part nouns like "pvp map" should go in quotes.
Proper noun or common name: Some acronym commonly used for a quest, or a relevant name.
"How do I calculate the DPS for a +3 Dirk of Dork" or "Calculating the DPS for a +3 Dirk of Dork" is going to find it, but you would have to trudge through hundreds of irrelevant results.
This is your query:
calculating (or calculate) dps "dirk of dork" +3
The search engine doesn't know what you're talking about; it scores results by how many of the words are in the result and how often they occur. In the bad queries it also hits how, do, i, the, for, and a. This is less of a problem here since search queries have to be at least 4 characters, but any word not directly relating to what you want will throw off the results.
Remember, you can search the whole message board, a single forum, a single thread, or a single page (control+F).

...thank you for coming down off of your pedastal and demonstrating to all us plebeians how to punch text into the search box.
I mean, it was baffling. Just this morning, I was sitting there, starting at the search button, but I didn't know how to click it. Now I do!
Be a smartass about it all you want, but I've watched people put completely senseless things in to search boxes and act shocked when the results aren't even close.
Rather than shitting on my genuine attempt at helping, perhaps you could just ignore the thread?
NICE!
those idiots don't read these threads though
You walk into a bar you've never been to before. Someone's just about to set it on fire. You cheer him on, then turn to the people in the bar and say "hey guys, since you're about to not have a bar anymore, here's how to use the yellow pages so you can find a new one!"
Come on, you don't need to be overtly condescending to still be condescending.
I've been pretty much neutral through this debacle. If you would take off your asshole-colored glasses for a moment, you would see that I was arguing towards a compromise.
Please link me to the post(s) where I displayed a gripe towards this forum. I went out of my way to stay impartial and would like to know where I slipped up to avoid the same mistake in the future.
Search function? No such feature. This is the first vbulletin forum I've ever used seriously enough to want to know how the search function works in depth. There are a hell of a lot of threads appearing and dissapearing on this forum as a whole. This was good information, and you are seeing it as an insult because you are angry at him.
Now, I don't care what happens to the forum. I have my topics subscribed, and if I didn't, I would adjust. I have no stake in this whatsoever. From my point of view, you are overreacting.
Besides, if you're here for LOTRO and there's one LOTRO thread, shouldn't be too hard to find the topic you're looking for. WoWers probably need this guide more than we do.
Man his only fault was lack of tact.
MKR, you lack tact. <---Also lacks tact.
And technically, it's my positive support and discussion of the negative feedback which is keeping it alive. So you are wrong there too.
Awesome.
well I wasn't talking to you anyways
I expected a mod to say "Oh, this is helpful; might be good to sticky.", or "Nah, we don't need this".
I didn't expect such an attitude.
Edit: and I have plenty of tact, I just didn't think I needed it to make a thread like this. I couldn't have anticipated such a hostile response.
Given the circumstances, I'm inclined to forgive. It's your call, of course.
No, they got infracted. Hell Wren got banned because his points added up. If you were being a condescending ass or something in the OP I'd have let them off with warnings. But you weren't, so I didn't.
EDIT: And Wren will be unbanned because, even though I read it multiple times, I thought he was calling the info useless...not that it would be useless once off the first page. My mistake, I apologize.
