Which includes this little gem:
"He was let off in the middle of a national forest, which is about 800,000 acres of beautiful pine trees," Lt. Mike Graham said.

What the fuck?

EDIT: They found him

That they would even ask a question like that makes you wonder.

If you are drunk on the streets the police take you to the drunk tank

if you are drunk on a train, amtrak will drop you off in the middle of a national forest

    uh

what kind of policy is that

now his diabetes was makin' him act like that maybe

but the dude could have said 'sorry i am being a jerk can someone just give me a damn candy bar and i'll calm the fuck down'

instead of making everyone think he was a crazy man who may have hurt himself or others

what if the guy really was fuckin' crazy. do they wait until they get to the next stop so he can flip out and maybe hurt someone or do they get him off the fuckin' train

Some of the symptoms of hypoglycemia are disorientation, as well as trouble speaking and nervousness. If he could have conveyed the message, I'm sure he would have.

Also, it's a pretty good chance that he hasn't found much insulin wandering alone in the woods, so he's in pretty serious danger of death, if not found.

Knob's point is a valid one, though. He was clearly acting as if he were a danger to the other passengers, so Amtrak did what they thought was best by acting to protect their other customers. This guy should have had some sort of bracelet or other identifier to clue the Amtrak workers into what was going on.

On the surface, yeah, Amtrak appears to be total dicks. But I'm not so sure they were entirely in the wrong.

They weren't wrong to take action, but throwing someone off the train in the middle of fucking nowhere, while disoriented for any reason, is an incredibly irresponsible thing to do.

EDIT: Not to mention the fact that they just dumped him and left him. The police weren't even notified until the family had to figure out the guy was missing on their own, then had to notify authorities.

Again, you're getting me wrong. I'm not acquitting them of all charges here. I'm simply saying that if this guy was acting as if he were a danger to others in his immediate vicinity, they were right to take some action. The action they chose was horrible, but this guy had some responsibility to communicate that this was a genuine medical condition, and if he couldn't do so verbally than it was his responsibility to do so through another method, such as an ID bracelet that explained that he was a diabetic and so would be prone to such attacks.

And your analogy is weak. Yes, people who drive are technically endangering others, but we allow them to do so as long as they can prove that they are competent enough to do so. If someone is not licensed or has put themself into a state where they are a very real danger to others, then we certainly have methods of making sure they cannot do so.

Yes, they were right to take action.

Throwing a senior citizen off at an abandoned crossing surrounded by woods with no roads in sight, without notifying the family or the police or anyone, wasn't the right action.
