PSP to Downgrade or Not to Downgrade, that is the question!
With the new Lumines exploit out for 3.50, is it worth my time to track down a copy of Lumines, a downloadable version of the 3.50 update, and all this custom firmware stuff?
I mean, what's really the big deal with this whole homebrew thing? Is it worthwhile possibly bricking my $200 piece of electronics?
Yes in every possible way it is worth it; I have gotten more value out of my PSP because of hackers than any meager effort Sony has put forth in the several years since its release.
Firmware modification is in all seriousness fairly easy and safe. Yes it is possible to brick your PSP, things can go wrong anytime you flash firmware, but there are many guides to help with the process and so long as you follow directions properly you will be virtually guaranteed success.
In return you get access to the wide plethora of homebrew applications which do all sorts of stuff, emulators if you're into that (Nearly flawless PSX emulation for nearly every title), you can launch UMD iso's from your memory stick so you don't have to carry your games around always or to improve load times, and you can still play the new games that try to enforce firmware upgrades while keeping your custom firmware.
Lumines is also like the most common game on the PSP, it shouldn't be hard to find for very cheap at all, and frankly if you wait the hacker community will probably find a way to do it sans Lumines anyway.
Yeah, using FW 3.40 OE-A is like having a useful gaming system again. Being able to use your PSP like a PDA (which is something Sony themselves should be supporting) and having the ability to fully customize your system is amazing.
Oh Maximum, one thing to note: Certain TA-82 motherboards ARE safe to downgrade, but have a way of keeping you from ever updating to an official Sony firmware after downgrading until the hacker community comes up with a workaround. Still, the great thing about 3.40 OE-A and the dark_alex firmwares is the fact that if you want, you can have it behave exactly the way the official firmware does.
I want to get a PSP eventually, and I'll be honest, I'd be scared as hell to do any sort of hacking. I'll probably be the 1% of people who get theirs bricked. Personally, I think the PSP has enough to offer without the hackdedness to be worth it for me.
On a side note, I was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of where to get the 3.50 firmware update, the downgrader, the 1.50 firmware, and instructions how to do this whole damn thing.
Also...a list of homebrew stuff that's worthwhile.

Unbricking PSPs for the common audience is not far away. All it takes is a specially made high capacity battery that is not yet out on the market, and certain files on your memstick.

Probably around 95% of that 1% that ends up bricking their PSP are kids who have no clue what they're doing and place files in the wrong spot, skim through or ignore directions, or have a catastrophic 'failure' like moving their hand to pick their nose and flipping the power switch on the way up as the firmware updates.
I just did this to mine. So far I honestly haven't seen many cool homebrew applications or games that interested me in the slightest.
Could I get a list or a PM?
One thing I did do was put Silent Hill PS1 on my PSP, and I'm playing through that now, and it really does run great. Other than the PSX games, I'm not sure what to do now that I have a homebrew capable PSP.
I really want the PSP to fail, so I can buy one and the 20 games I really want to play for it for cheap.
I know that's stupid, but my DS currently occupies so much of my on-the-go-gaming, that I really can't justify spending that much money on adding to my backlog.
I'd also appreciate a simple guide on how to take my PSP (currently at 3.00) and my copy of Lumines and magically turn it into a wonderful, custom firmware device.
Does anyone know of a good homebrew solution to viewing pictures on their psp? I need the ability to view pictures in branching folder trees of my choosing, and have better options in general. I tried PSPPDA as a general solution and am not pleased.
Meh, I play my PSP to play PSP games. I have no desire for homebrew or anything else legal/illegal.
I was exactly this way until I decided to take the plunge. It's really, really worth it; like Scosglen said above, even if you do nothing but play PSP games on it, you can use a custom firmware to unlock the brightest screen level (great for when playing outside), customize the XMB with minor tweaks (I now no longer get the Sony splash screen on bootup), plus rip your own UMDs to the memory stick, which I haven't done yet but saves you a shitload of battery power and cuts down on loading time dramatically.
I've barely even touched homebrew, but I'm going to start tinkering around with it; there's actually a cool app called PiKey that lets you use an IR PDA keyboard to type/play games with, plus there are IM clients and such. Plus homebrew ports of freeware PC shmups, like rRootage.
From what I've heard, downgrading is virtually idiotproof so long as you take the necessary steps. It was a piece of cake for me, and now that there's a Lumines exploit it's really worth the 30 minutes of time it'll take to set up a custom firmware.
On a side note, I was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of where to get the 3.50 firmware update, the downgrader, the 1.50 firmware, and instructions how to do this whole damn thing.

That'll be directly against the forum rules to post publicly. Ask for PMs.
The only thing I'm sad about with this new exploit is that the GTA: VCS I bought for $40 is now fairly worthless.
I recently downgraded/upgraded/whatever to and all I can say is yes it is very much worth it. Is it kosher to mention ripping PSX games that you own and putting them on your PSP to play? If it isn't then I've totally never done it and have not in fact spent the weekend playing Mega Man Legends and Final Fantasy Tactics in bed.
* This includes abandonware and leaked software. We have a zero tolerance policy on the discussion of bootleg games and ROMS. Discussing them means you will be banned. At the request of Gabe there will be ZERO discussion of emulators or ROMs at all except for commercial sites backed by the game publishers. This rule comes from above and is not subject to debate.
2 ) Piracy and emulation :
* These may still be discussed as news issues, but any passing mention to methods, techniques or resources is strictly not allowed. Any violation of the above rule is grounds for immediate banning. Just don't do it.
THis isn't to say don't talk, it just means don't talk about emulation. Homebrew is peachy.
I'd absolutely recommend downgrading. I picked up my PSP for the first time in like a month and stumbled upon the downgrade. I had Lumines already (got it with my PSP) and downgraded. As for what I'd recommend , track down NoGravity. It's a really slick homebrew 3D space shooter. Probably the best graphics I've seen in a PSP homebrew (explosions are perdy).
I'd also check out some custom themes, these can be a bit more dangerous, as you're directly swapping files in flash0, but I'm pretty sure there are some homebrew programs that automate it for you.

The timing of this tread couldn't be better as I just purchased a PSP this morning. Pre-downgraded from a guy off of Craig's List (where I get all my older systems). Anyway, can someone list some "must have" homebrew for me?
Also, I just asked this in Help/Advice but I'll ask it here...
Is there any way to transfer files to/from your PSP using only the wireless connection? I'm currently using the special 3.4 firmware...

What do you guys think of the PSP2 rumours. I hear tell that Sony might show the thing off at E3.

Depends on how you want to. I know there's an FTP server app, and there SHOULD be an FTP browser app, so all you'd have to do is run an FTP server on your computer to share the files you want to access, and then run the server on the PSP when you want to get something off of it.

If you do it right it really is pretty safe.

Man, I really wish they could make a option for downgrading that didn't involve me having to buy some game.

You should own Lumines anyway.
