I broke something while house-sitting

Okay, let me give out a little background on this one first.

Basically I took a second job at this gas station where I know the owners. The idea was to work just weekend mornings but I got roped into watching the store this weekend (thu-sun) and was told they'd be back to close up on Sunday night. I also, stupidly, agreed to watch over one of the owners' house and dog for the four days and stay there.

Now, he didn't trust me enough to give me a key (fear of making copies, I suppose) and instead gave me just a garage door opener and no backup to get in the house. So long story short I locked myself out of the house and had to punch out one of the accordion pieces on the side of his AC to get back in the house. I also put a crack in the plastic grill on the front of the machine.

Now, he didn't offer me anything for house sitting and I was doing this just to be a buddy. I provided my own meals and beer while I was there and I washed everything up after myself. Re-assembled the sleep sofa, etc. During this same time I also backed up all his important data on his home PC and did a complete windows reinstall. He has no computer knowledge so he would have paid Geek Squad whatever it is they charge for this.

He was in NYC for a wedding and I decided I'd wait until he got back to tell him about the damage so he could enjoy his time there. So, everything was going swimmingly until tonight when I got the call(he was calling from the road) telling me that I was going to have to close the store and he asked me to bring him some groceries from the store. So not only did I have to stay an extra four hours but I had to drive two towns away to bring him his stuff. I get there and he lets me in like I'm some kind of pariah. I had forgotten my cereal and two beers there and they were already out and waiting for me.

I showed him what happened with the AC and he told me he had already seen it. I offered right then and there to replace the whole unit and he said no yet I could see in his eyes that he wanted a brand new one. Then he has his wife hand me some tupperware with food that's over a week old in it and he lets me out of the house.

Now my original plan was to replace all the broken parts of his machine and just go about business as usual but after this it's looking like I'm just going to take my money and get a new job. After tonight he owes me about $500 in back pay. Should I just take the cash and go or should I still replace the AC?

Go get your money. Yea, its an awkward situation, but he owes you for your work, so go get your check.

Ah sorry I should have been more clear. I'm definitely getting my money but I'm struggling to decide how much property, if any, I'm going to replace.

I hate to be a downer but why are you letting this guy shit on you? You did him a favour and made an honest mistake, if he's a buddy he would understand. I think you need to think about what's best for you.

Legally you a required to repair what you broke.

If you broke it that much that it needs to be fully replaced, that's what legally you need to do.

These people by the sounds of it however are a bunch or tightarse pricks that enjoy taking advantage of your helpfull nature. Repair what you damaged and no more.

He said he didn't want you to replace it. What's the problem exactly? Even if you could tell by the wistful twinkle in his eyes that he'd really like a new air-con, he let you off so :?:

I don't really get all the bitching about how much :effort: sitting his house was either. You agreed to do it presumably knowing how long it would take and what was going to be involved.

Uh, while it's too late to change, why did you break your way back in without calling him up first? It's not like the house would've burned down if you had to pass on house sitting for a few days, right?

the accordian thing and plastic can be very easily repaired/replaced without having to buy a new unit. They sell the accordian things at Home Depot/Lowes/wherever and the plastic should be easy to fix with super glue. then get your money and go.

You should have called him and asked if a neighbor had spare key. But right now, repair what you damage and nothing more.

You offered to pay for the damage, he said no. So take the cash and go. The work you did for him more than makes up for the damage you did (which is partly his fault anyway, because he wouldn't give you a key). He took advantage of you, he shouldn't get anything more from you.
