Do you support great indie games?

GameHatGameHat Registered User regular

I'm wondering who all considers it a duty to support great indie games

For instance:

There's been like five HUGE Dwarf Fortress threads in G&T.

That's how I found the game, and though its freeware I'll be damned if it isn't one of the finest games I've ever played

After about ten hours of playing (not all at once, of course .... but close) I was eager to donate something to show my support for the game

Anyone else feel like that about an indie game?

I do support GOOD indie games.

I do not, however, support shitty indie games... just because they're indie games doesn't mean I should like it no matter how much it sucks.

    Continue.

I don't exactly consider it a duty, but I will throw down some money for a game that really grabs me. Crimsonland got my money, and how.

Same can be said about music.

Support what you like, and what deserves it. That's about all there is to it, whether indy or not.

I would say that a development house of only 11 people still classifies as indie. I personally prefer Darwinia over Defcon though.

I actually found a brand new copy of Darwinia at Big Lots last week for 2 dollars. Brand new and sealed!

I ended up buying it for the keychain and the poster though. I installed it and it just didn't appeal to me.

I absolutely love uplink and defcon though.

Hmm... the only indie game I can remember supporting financially is Nexus War, a browser based RPG along the lines of Urban Dead, except with less zombies and more crazy giant war between the forces of order, chaos and free will.

I think just spreading the word and talking about some indie games is often more effective then sending them a dollar or two to support them.

I remember reading something about Introversion and when they first came out with uplink. From what I remember, they spread it around on forums devoted to hacking and the like and the hits on their page went up exponentially for a while. Apparently, they had to completely change the way they were taking orders in order to keep up with the unexpected demand.

    Mount and Blade.

Bought so fast, back when it was even cheaper.

If they ever got a multiplayer team mode on that, I think I would have a stroke from pure joy, and then gladly pay $60 for it.

It's only an hour and a half long, what were you doing, hopping in place? ;-)

Anyway, Within a Deep Forest for more gameplay and less atmosphere.

But man, if he ever made a version of Knytt that randomizes item locations I'd play it daily. Daily.

Each year at Gama/CMP we run the IGF to support these types of games, on which I'm a judge. There are a lot of really cool indie efforts out there, so many that I seem to always stumble across a gem or two I had not heard about before. And some of these games are very polished. Like Bit Blot's Aquaria. Or my favorite from this year's comp, Queasy Games' Everyday Shooter.
