Sorry if this has been talked about before, but I was looking at the upcoming Live Arcade releases and saw that they're making Talisman for Live, PS3, and PC...

Talisman For XBLA, PSN & PC Factsheet
Release Date: Winter 2007
Genre: Action RPG
Platform: Xbox LIVE® Arcade, PLAYSTATION®Network, PC
Rating: RP (Rating Pending)
Developer: Big Rooster
Price: TBD

Game Description:
Based on Games Workshop's classic board game, Talisman is the quintessential fantasy hybrid board/role-playing game for up to four players, either online or offline. The game takes place in a fantasy realm and is based very closely on the board game through a 3D representation of the map with animated movements and in-game events. Characters are fully animated as they walk about the board, attack other creatures, cast beautiful effect-laden spells and use objects to enhance their actions. Talisman will be rolling its way onto Xbox LIVE® Arcade, PLAYSTATION®Network and PC this winter. The highly anticipated 4th Edition of the board game is due for release from Games Workshop"s Black Industries imprint in October 2007.

Features:

* Electronic board game with 3D characters and environments
* 1 - 4 players offline and online multiplayer
* Dynamic camera angles adjust to each active player
* Up to 25 characters from the Talisman franchise
* Unique features for each character including strength and magical abilities
* Voice chat options
* Downloadable game expansions including character updates, adventure card updates and alternate endings.

This looks like a more complicated version of Hero Quest. Am I right? This might be fun.

Everything you need to know is there.

I spent many many many hours in the 80's and early 90's playing this. It's a blast.

Basically, and it's not confined to a dungeon. I'd say it's more complicated in some ways but easier in others. There were three board expansions (Dungeon, City, and Timescape) and several extra card and character expansions. Tons of fun. Seriously.

This, Catan, and Carasonne (sp?) are making me buy a 360 tomorrow. Seriously.

I love Talisman, and I'm pretty sure I brought this up in the last thread about it but here goes. I will probably not buy this game, and here's why.

Talisman is a special experience, a simplified, non continuous and non cooperative version of Hero Quest. The game itself is wildly expensive and very demanding. You need a huge table, a bunch of nerdly friends, and at least 90 minutes (usually more) to get a full round in. Even then, you must be careful how often you play it, as you can easily burn yourself out on the experience.

Talisman by itself is already enough of a fusion of a video game and a board game. To bring it back to some of its creative roots is mind blowing. I say for you out there who have never played this game to get it on XBLA, and find others who have never played. For those with a large group of friends who wouldn't mind playing and paying for this game, go out and buy it and all the expansions (I believe it is being/has been released at a slightly lower price point) and have the time of your life.

Games workshop are actually releasing a new version of talisman sometime next year. Between than and this, I may never stop playing. Ever.

I stupidly let a 1st edition copy of Talisman go, every version since has been a pale imitation. I'm guessing V4 from GW will be nothing to write home about. A computer version would be gravy though, so I look forward to it. But mostly because I'm waiting for a DS port. *crosses fingers*

Ack, I did too and along with it went my collection of RuneQuest stuff, ie Trollpak, Pavis, Big Rubble, etc. :(

    It still hurts.

Neat. I still have a very piecemeal set back at my parent's house. It's missing so many random cards though that I'm sure it wouldn't go for much of anything. I don't think we had a single "Heal" spell left, and I distinctly remember thinking that the godly Prophetess was also MIA.

Game was kickass, apart from some balance issues (that Prophetess character with 2 permanent spells was lame, we ended up banning her).

Two spells -and- the extra Adventure card.

    Fuck you 360 owners.

Aside from that, this sounds pretty awesome, although I have to admit I think you do lose something by not being a bunch of nerds around a table rolling dice.

The beauty of the game was allying with other players to gang up on the powerful guy, only to inevitably doublecross each other later. Kinda like Monopoly. Wonder if that will translate well online.

Winter is too far away. I played this game so much back in the day; a buddy of mine had pretty much all the expansions. Summers during junior high and high school were largely composed of massive Talisman binges. He pretty much always won; the guy had incredible luck.

I keep finding myself tempted to get the boardgame, but it always is selling for a fuckzillion dollars on E-bay.

Seriously, with this, Catan, Culdcept Saga my 360 is going to be the most expensive board game in the world.

Considering that a good game of Talisman will run you three hours .... no.

Word is that this is a vastly changed adaptation of Talisman. When was the last time something like that worked out to be a game worth spending any time at all with?

Talisman is incredibly simple. Why would they have to change anything? What's your source?

I'll check out the new version, and I'll almost certainly buy it, but I just can't shake the feeling that it won't be the same.

As to the XBLA version, there are alot of simple changes that could speed the game up. I think it would be worthwhile to lower the number of experience needed to increase a stat. If I remember correctly, it's 7 points; lowering that to 4 or 5 would make characters more powerful faster, which means they would have a better chance of handling the endgame sooner. Lowering the number of Lives would help also.

They could also get rid of some of the suckier classes...I mean, really, who wants to be a Zulu?

Just the fact that there won't be set-up time and the movement, dice rolling and card drawing will be automatic will shave some time off.
