If a rodent with functional male genitals is deprived of androgens immediately after birth (either by castration or by the administration of a compound that blocks androgens), male sexual behavior, such as mounting, will be reduced, and more female sexual behavior, such as lordosis (arching of the back when receptive to coitus), will be expressed.

Remove or add testosterone to mice shortly after birth, and their brains develop according to the presence of the hormone, regardless of their sex.

Okay, Tobasco. So, crazy man who has been proven to have killed 79 people in the space of three days. We know that he's fucking insane, that's why he is locked up in the psych ward in a nice jacket that makes him hug himself. Do you have a problem with giving him antipsychotics so that he's at least somewhat manageable?

Or are you just against it in everyday life? In which case, I agree to a point. They are prescribed to frequently, especially to children, but they aren't always bad. If it wasn't for concerta, I would be having a hell of a time in school.

I am just of the opinion that altering your brain chemicals every day to make you a "better person" tends to do more harm to people than good. It obviously works for some people, but I think it also hurts a lot of people as well.
Uh, you understand that some people have brain chemistry that is out of whack and without some tinkering bad things can happen? Anyway, I should stay out of this probably. Just trust me, competent psychiatric help is not to be undervalued or dismissed. There are good doctors out there.

No, I'm an atheist. I believe in science. And there is no science behind psychotherapy. I changed my major from Psychology to Philosophy when I learned how much of it was just lame guesswork with no scientific backing.

    People are quite predictable.

Psychology is guesswork yes, but guesswork based on, you know, years and years of studying humanity and its flaws.

True, but I think a lot of what they take as fact is bullshit. The worst beef I have is with psych meds. I've been put on them twice in my life, both times with disastrous results.
BECAUSE WHAT APPLIES TO YOU APPLIES TO EVERYBODY

The way the DSM-IV is written, it should apply to everyone. This is the biggest problem I have with it. Take some psych classes, you'll see exactly what I mean. Messing with brain chemicals under the guise that you know what your doing is just wrong.

If the DSM-V was written so that it applied to everybody it would suggest that the patient should try to keep breathing. Because other than that, fucking nothing applies to everybody.
Do you not fucking understand that everybody is basically biochemically different, with different metabolic rates, and different abilities to absorb different drugs.
The effectiveness of every drug we use is a curve. Effective drugs have the majority of the poipulation in the middle of the curve, but there are still those who are going to be in the outlying sections and not have it work very fucking well for them.
You don't get to write off a medical profession as bullshit when you know fucking nothing about what you are talking about.

There are some good doctors out there, but altering brain chemicals should be a last ditch maneuver, when no other therapy can work. Anti-depressants are ridiculously easy to get. I didn't even ask for them and I was prescribed them. That's pretty terrible.

That doesn't mean that everybody is gonna flip out. And like Noom said, it's impossible to apply this shit to everyone. And let's go with another common example, one that I can relate to: ADHD. Does therapy work? Sometimes. Are meds prescribed to help with therapy, or on their own if therapy doesn't work? Yes. Do these have big bad side effects on people who actually need them, because their brain chemistry is different from everyone else's? Very rarely.

The point is, you obviously didn't need the pills. That doesn't make the pills bad, it doesn't mean everyone who prescribes them is bad, it means that the guy who prescribed them for you was wrong.
EDIT: This coming from a kid who's been seeing a psychologist off and on since kindergarten, so about 12 years, and was recently told by the same doctor that I have some form of Asberger's and Tourette's-like symptoms. He apparently diagnosed these when I was younger, and told my mom but not me.
