I want an Elite, but online prices are...wow...

So, after mooching off of my dad's 360 for some time now, I've decided to go on and buy my own.
Since I am only at my dad's house one month of each year, my play time is limited to that and when I'm at friend's houses. I am prepared to make this investment since I have games and a Live account already.
After checking all game stores, electronic stores, and general department stores, I can find no Elites (Ironically, I've spotted about 5 Wiis).
So I gave up the hunt and checked online.
Some sites are straight up sold out, while others...well....
Amazon: $595?!

Walmart:$739!?!? (It is a bundle, but it's a ripoff, and I don't need half that stuff)

And several retardly high priced units on eBay, among other sites.
WTF? I had no idea these were so hard to come by.
I have $525 to spend, enough to buy it with tax and free shipping (If supplied...) and maybe a used game. But everywhere I go it seems overpriced...

Do you really need an Elite? It's a larger hard drive and HDMI versus the premium as I understand it.

It's not about having the Elite exactly, but it's the fact that it's NEW and SHINY and ME WANTY.
But yeah, I could opt for a "Premium" or whatever they call it nowadays. But I don't see why Elites are so damned hard to find.

Aren't the black elites limited? I thought it was 200,000 elites then they go back to using the white cases. I want one, but I am terrified of it dieing and I keep hearing about this smaller chipsize in a few months so I'm just sitting here without sweet vidoegames.

If you get a _new_ Xbox 360 (that's been manufactured after April or so), or a replaced Xbox 360, it should come with the necessary modifications to be as stable as the Elite. There has been some talk of better fans on new 360s and refurbished ones, which I don't believe the Elite has.

As I understand it the Elite just has an asstonne of epoxy around the cores to prevent warping from disconnecting the processors from their contacts.

I think they're not going to be manufactured after the end of this year. The 65nm chips are what I'm holding out for as well.

We actually got an Elite in today at work (Target) and 2 Wiis. I was tempted to buy it since mine is on death's door and I haven't called Microsoft yet. But Black doesn't match my TV, I don't need the extra space at the moment and HDMI would only make a negligible difference.

My local blockbuster had one the other day. You might want to try there. (and really, other places that aren't big box stores - those guys are the ones that sell them within hours of being on the shelf. the small stores are where things hide)

    $479

And according my computer all of the Target stores in my region got at least 1 some 2. I imagine most of them sold out, but the one at my store was still there when I left around 5. You should try calling around, the shipments for them are really sporadic.

I'd love to get an Elite, if I can find one.
The only thing I really have against the current gen. of games is the price of the consoles and the games themselves! (60 dollars!)
The Wii is pretty neat and has a bunch of awesome games the only problem is that they don't exist yet

To the people that currently own an Elite, is it really a matte black?
Because all the videos and pictures I've seen of the consumer with an elite they look grey.
But on the review sites they are the perfect "deep" black.

Microsoft have said that no unit is being replaced, they will be keeping all three SKUs. The Elite is not replacing the Premium or whatever. The Elite is not a limited edition. It may at some point come in white, but you know how things go with future plans not always being solid.
"The Elite is not a limited edition. It's permanent. And we will not replace any sku," Penello explained when referring to the flurry of rumors preceeding the official announcement. "We now have three SKUs and we predict the primary seller will continue to be the Pro system."

You saw 5 wiis? You should have picked up a few and sold them on Ebay - they still go for above MRSP on ebay. That could have eaten away at the cost of an elite.

Best Buy will have at least 9 per store on Sunday.

My local store got in 20. Moments after they came in they had 19.

Roomate who works inventory = win.

EDIT: Also, if you live in MD the FYE in Arundel Mills gets them in frequently, as well as Wiis, and no one thinks to look for them there. That's what the register biscuit told me when I commented on the one behind the counter.

The Elites are getting ALOT easier to find now.

Those pictures are probably all being shot with a digital point and shoot camera and those as a rule are shit at capturing things like colour or shades with any legitimate accuracy. I'd trust the images supplied by Microsoft, as they'll be shot by professionals with professional gear, and because if they're not accurate to the real thing, it's called false advertisement. So you can be relatively certain that their photos are a good basis for judgement.

Games like Rainbow Six Vegas and Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter have some huge map packs 1.4GB, 800MB, etc. Oblivion's Shivering Isles expansion is a gig and doesn't (yet anyway) have a disc version for 360. Lost Planet Multiplayer Map Packs are not small either. Also, you have like 400MB of Halo 2 map packs on their too, possibly.

You get enough games like that, PLUS all your Live Arcade stuff, a movie or two, rip some music to the hard drive. That hard drive is gonna fill up.
