Hey, zOMG I just bought a PS2 and man, besides soul calibur 2(moreso than 3) and the katamari series, i haven't been using it for anything. then a friend gave me disgaea, and i'm in love with it. what else to buy? i'm looking at disgaea 2 if i can find it. i like fairly intelligent writing, and don't like plotless/lame games.
Thanks much!
PS now that i've seen etna i see the rationale for making my gf do cosplay
People need to lay off the Late to the Party (Lttp) shit
EDIT: You have been here since 2003, you should know how to make an OP. Also, you say thanks much, but you didnt say anything other than disgaea = awesome (which i agree with)
I was also late to the party on this game (just gotboth games less than 6 months ago) and gotta agree. I even went so far as to get the entire anime series on DVD.

Sorry, I didn't know protocol - would you be happier if I just said " I need more games like this to be happy", rather than inciting a discussion a bout disgaea. I didn't think we needed to discuss the game any more - hence me being late to the party - and that's why i was just asking for more recommendation.

You should probably look into other strategy games made by the same company; though they don't all use the grid-based system(Phantom Brave and Makai Kingdom use free-movement spherical grids, sort of), but the stories are good(mostly Phantom Brave's).
You can't go wrong with Disgaea 2. Outside of that, there's Stella Deus(good story, difficult gameplay) and FFT if you can find it.
And La Pucelle was one of their first, but it's also kind of uncommon. Also has a good story.

I missed the "what else should I buy part", but the op is still really weak.
As for other games: Phantom Brave, Malkai Kingdom, La Pucelle Tactics, Disgaea 2 are all part of the same style game as disgaea . I may have missed one in there. Good luck finding all of the except for disgaea 2, which is still out there in large numbers

Don't let people be dicks to you, feel free to start an LTTP thread.
For other games like it, you can go with La Pucelle Tactics, Phantom Brave, Makai Wars, as those are done by the same company. For games in the same genre, Final Fantasy Tactics and more importantly, Tactics Ogre are great PSX games.
I couldn't find Disgaea for the longest time, so I bought Phantom Brave. Just didn't do the trick. :? I never did find an SRPG quite like Disgaea (but I found it for like $30 later on, thankfully).

It should be noted that Phantom Brave and Makai Kingdom both have radial movement rather than squares. This usually translates to anything remotely squishy getting bum rushed with no hope of forming a defensive wall.
On top of Tactics Orge:LUCT and FFT, I'd suggest Front Mission if you love mechs.
Oh, and beware of Kartia and Hoshigami.

This game's enough to make someone retire from SRPGs.
What about the ds remake? I already went and bought fearing I wouldnt be able to find it, but its still unopened.
Just as frustrating. The story is definitely improved; fourth battle and I've already seen a (good) cutscene that I definitely don't remember from the original.
But the third battle in the game? I lost three characters. Perma-death. I replayed it five times before I finished without a death.
And this is on normal.
It's as difficult as ever, but they've polished it to at least make it worth trying. Barely.
its not out yet, but we also have Soul Nomad on the way in september. it has a very tactics ogre feel to it, and the localization is absolutely mind-blowingly brilliant and incredible and also awesome.

I actually ended up liking Makai Kingdom more than Disgaea.
Also, they aren't SRPG's but the writing in the Metal Gear Solid and Silent Hill series is pretty good (though MGS2 wasn't translated all that brilliantly). Go pick up Ico, Shadow of the Colossus and Okami while you're at it. Oh and there's the God of War's.
cj - i love your sig because i want us to publish that game so bad.
xenogears - well, i did the localization for it. dialogue writing and voice direction and all that. but the game is easily the best ive done (not counting disgaea 2, as i only did items and bonus levels for that).

Oh I take it you had a bigger role in this title.
Any hint on what's down the road?
the "no true scotch man" fallacy.

That was the funniest line I've heard since Hammer's infamous mad skillz line in Xenogears.
