I am 17 and live in Victoria. I was at my uncle's farm today shooting some cans with his air rifle, and decided I want to get into shooting. Being in Australia I need an actual gun license to get an airsoft rifle. I am 17, so I can apply for a junior license until I hit 18. But I don't know where to begin. I obviously would need to join some sort of club, or have some sort of reason for owning one. Realistically I just want to shoot cans for fun, and not develop this into a long-time sport. I think I need to complete a firearm safety course first, but once again, I don't know where to even begin. I have checked the police website and it says I need to complete a safety course, and I think I also need to be a member of a club. I live in Melbourne if it matters. Has anyone in Australia done this? Where do I begin? Thank you.
I'm not sure about the whole safety course and whatnot but I'm fairly sure that state law requires you to be a member of a gun club and attend at least 10 meetings a year to get a gun license, but that might just be for handguns.
If your uncle has a farm, you wont need to join a club. Your uncle will have to fill out a form saying he gives you permission to hunt on his property though. Recreational hunting is one of the 'Genuine reasons' to own a firearm, and you just need to prove you have a place to hunt.
A junior permit only allows you to go shooting. You cant actually buy and own a firearm on that type of licence.
Or, alternately, take advice from MrIamMe, and join the army and play with real weapons. heheh.
I'd go back if I wasn't a washed up old bastard. I'm settling into the role of cranky old man these days rather than cranky DS.

Alternatively, join the army and use a real weapon you pansy No Offense intended.
Shooting is hella fun when its for points, with moving targets and 3 sec snap shoots from the shoulder at 300m.
I don't want to shoot people or have them shoot at me ;-)

A good place to get the right info is the VIC firearms registry, on the VIC police site. http://www.police.vic.gov.au/content.asp?Document_ID=111
