So whenever I open up the applications folder on my MacBook I get the swirly rainbow for about 2 minutes and then the applications folder opens.
Does anyone know what is going on here? Or how to fix it?

Try repairing the permissions.
Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility
Select your drive on the left, then select verify disk permissions - let it run, then select repair disk permissions - let it run. Restart the mac.
Try that.

Before you do that, check if you have any USB stuff plugged in. If you do, try unplugging them and then use the Disk Utility again.
Happens to me a lot when I have my iPod plugged in and restarting after using the Disk Utility usually does the trick.
