The original XBox controller for all regions outside of Japan, aka the Duke, is one of the most controversial video game controllers of all time. Controversial because opinions about it are extremely varried.
Some loved it, some hated it, and,in the end, the haters one out, andthe Duke was discontinued, with the Japanese controller, now called controller s, replacing the Duke in all markets.
But what of the Duke lovers? Those who enjoyed using the duke; felt that its button layoutwas superb; enjoyed the ergonomics designed with larger hands in mind? Those who loved the Duke were left out in the cold. For a time after the discontinuation, the remaining stock of Dukes were still on shelves, but the supply dwindled, and Duke fans knew that every time a Duke was purchased, that was one less Duke that would ever be on sale again. Even after the Duke had sold out completely, used Dukes could be found. They were something of a rare sight, but not impossible if one looked hard enough. Used controllers are a gamble, though, and never feel the same as the brand new ones.
Then the 360 was announced, and Duke fans the world over realized the the end of the Duke was fast approaching. Sure enough, the 360's redesigned controller was obviously based on the controller s, which was no suprise due to its popularity, and furthermore, there was no hardware backwards compatability, denying Duke Fans to utilize their old standbys. Some tried to mod their Dukes by removing the innards and inserting the insides of a 360 controller, but for those without the skills to mod this was out of the question, and beyond that, the thought of destroying a Duke was unthinkable for many.
The purpose of this thread is to bring together these Duke fans, so that we might organize, and as a unified front request of Microsoft either Duke support for the 360, or a new 360 version of the Duke. Once this goal is achieved we may well procede on to fighting for other causes related to the revival of legacy control schemes and/or the promotion of controllers that fit bigger hands. This is the begining of the formation of the
Coalition of Duke Enthusiasts, and just maybe, the begining of a change in how video game makers think about ergonomics.
It does not matter
why you are a fan of the Duke. Some enjoyed the uniqueness. Some enjoyed the button placement. Some, like myself, are endowed with larger hands, and found the Duke to be the only controller ever that truely felt like it fit us. Whatever you reason, we are all in this together.
The first step we must undertake, in order to achieve out goals, is recruitment and organization. All who are fans of teh Duke are encouraged to join, and no responsibilities will be placed on the heads of anyone save those who volunteer for them. Of course, volunteers are needed too, to help with organizing, and perhaps even run a webpage for our cause. I myself will do my best to lead until at least such time as we are sufficiently organized to hold some form of elections. Any volunteers for any roles I have mentioned, or for any roles that you can think of that I have not mentioned, are greatly appreciated. While we are starting out on this Penny Arcade message board, I hope that this can take off and become something more widespread. To this end, feel free to spread word of it to any other Duke Enthusiasts that you know.
Those who would like to join and/or volunteer are encouraged to post in this thread. Also, if you would like, you can send an email to my gmail account, which is TheEvander. I will use this information to compile a membership list.
Remember; the Duke was discontinued due to pressure from those who did not like it. If consumer pressure was able to destroy it, then it stands to reason that enough consumer pressure could once again bring it back. Let us use this thread to discuss our love of the Duke, and to organize ourselves that we might fight for its return.

As a post script to those who disliked the Duke, let me just say that, while your opinions are certainly valid for yourselves, so are ours for us. This thread, however, was not created to discuss the merits of the Duke, and while I cannot bar you from criticizing it in here, I would appreciate, if you do feel like criticizing it, that you do so elsewhere. This thread was created in order that a group of gamers might get together for a cause thatthey believe in, and while you may not agree with our cause, it surely will not cause you harm, and the mere fact of gamers coming together for something should hold enough merit that you not try to detract from it. I thank you in advance for your cooperation.
TL;DR: I want to organize a group, called the
Coalition of Duke Entusiasts, to work towards geting Microsoft to either impliment a way to use the Duke on the 360, or to create a new Duke (even in limited quantities) just forthe 360.

However, I never owned a Xbox. Just my preference when playing Halo with friends, etc...
I hated the S.
They managed to get the shoulder buttons on to the controller s, I'm sure they could manage to do it with the Duke.
Were they to design a new one some slight changes are to be expected, simply to turn it in to a 360 controller. the removal of the memory card slots and b&w buttons, the addition of a removable battery, a plug-and-play port, the should bumpers and the home button, etc. What we are looking for, though, is a controller that is the same in form factor.
The Duke is not for everyone, and I recognize that. Still, it would be of detriment to no one for them to simply bringout a new Duke alongside the current controller. No one is suggesting that they do away with the original 360 controller; that would be absurd.
Even if a 360 Duke were to be released only in limited quantities, that would be something more than we have now.
Compared to thefact that, on the controller s, I was unable to bend my thumbs in sch a manner as to hit the start, back, black, or white buttons, I didn't mind the placement of the duke buttons so much.
Cause Duke sucks!
zing!

It is a sign of affection, and of respect. I believe it was given this nickname after the Duke himself, John Wayne.
For simillar reasons, it is also reffered to in some circles as "the Caddie", but the Duke is a far more common name, to the point where many are under the impression that this was it's actual retail name.
Love the acronym, btw.

thanks, I went through a few ideas before settling on this one. I figured it may not be a word, but it is easy to remember.
Likewise.. and I was going to laugh at them.
I always annoyed me that I can't get one for 360.

We fall but our souls are flying
For serious.
I'd settle for using a duke through some sort of USB adapter, but even that supposedly doesn't work.
Hopefully we can convince them to at least do a little market research on a 360 Duke.
syndalissuggesteda great namefor it, by the way: the Baron.
the button placement was crap and you know it, Evander.
plus I can play the S with one hand
You have tiny, baby hands.
Uh, no
Anyway, wouldn't it be easier to make a 360 USB adapter without taking the controller apart? Or perhaps wiring the duke into a 360 controller (not putting 360 controller internals into a duke.)
And it is my most favorite controller.

Fixed.
DUKE IS LIFE
Crap button placement is when you cannot reach the start/back/black/white buttons without spraining your thumbs.
I am entirely serious about wanting to get MSoft to do this.
We need a unified front, to show them that there are consumers who care.
