You know what they say about guys with big feet...
The problem is, I can't get shoes that fit right. My feet are wide. My shoes right now are size 12 and 4E width. My toes are squished together and overlap each other in my shoes. It's been like this so long that my toes even overlap each other when my shoes are off.
Any suggestions on where to get wider shoes? I don't want to go any bigger, I've tried 12 1/2 and 13 and they were too long and loose at my heels. I'm hesitant to order on-line from like a big and tall shop or something, I really don't want to buy shoes without trying them on first.
I normally wear New Balance. Are there any brands that are normally wider? I need running shoes or cross trainers for wearing to the gym, so brands that sell that style of shoe are preferred.
I wear a 13 6E, so I am familiar with your problem. I've resolved it by wearing sandals constantly, aside from my $200 hiking boots, which I use for hiking. If anyone has a solution, I, too, would be interested.
Yeah, I used to wear skate shoes and had the same problem then. Plus skate shoes are awful for running in, so not really a good choice for the gym.
I've been planning on getting some sandals to wear when not at the gym to see if that helps some. I just don't really like sandals, though, so I'm trying to avoid it. Plus I'm concerned that some (most?) of the soreness I get when running instead of using the elliptical comes from shoes not fitting right.
There are special stores that sell extra wide shoes. For Thanatos, there is one on 205th and Meridian in Shoreline next to the 76 station that I drive by all the time. I don't remember the name of it, but it is easy to find. For the OP, check the yellow pages. You aren't the first guy to have huge, wiley coyote type feet.

I've had problems finding good fitting shoes in stores as well, and eventually found that online shoe retailers sometimes offer free shipping to you AND for returns. Example: Shoebuy.com. The exchange process was painless and eventually I found the proper size and fit.
And a little Google magic has pulled up this gem: justwideshoes.com. They offer wide sizes in a variety of styles, in addition to free shipping to you and on exchanges. You wouldn't get free shipping on a return. Still, free shipping on an exchange is a great deal and allows you to take a chance on a new brand without breaking the bank.
New Balance seems to be the shoe of choice for a runner with wide feet. Here's the New Balance M1122, available in size 12, 6E width. Zappos also offers free shipping both ways.
Unless you live by a specialty store, as Newton suggested, take a chance on these online stores offering free return shipping.
Skate shoes can work. Zappos.com, Endless.com (amazons venture) and Shoebuy.com are all places with cheap to free shipping both ways. Order a few pairs and try them out.
See now I used to wear New Balance too until recently. THe last pair I bought squeezed the fuck out of my foot and after a full day off working I couldnt wear them anymore. I find sketchers too be much more comfortable. I wear a size 16 and the tounge says F12 width so its right up my ally. I order my online so I think you can only go with regular or wide but the wide ones should be what you're looking for.
Though I seriously would try to keep them dry because in my experience if I am in a wet environment or when its winter around here then my shoes dont last quite as long as when I keep them dry. Yeah they are kind of cheap but you get what you pay for (and I seriously havent found anything more comfortable for the price.)
You know, my New Balance have been falling apart pretty quickly, the last couple pairs. I wonder if they are getting cheap on the quality.
I have some Converse All-Stars that fit too, but to get size 15-16 you need to order directly from the website, and even then pretty much only the black ones.

I'll definitely check out these online places with free shipping/returns.
As to local big and tall stores, I haven't seen any, but given the size of the city I'd be very surprised if there aren't several now that I think about trying to find a local one. Not sure why I didn't think to find a local one to begin with... guess I figured since I haven't seen them, they must not exist locally and left it at that.
I'm curious where you manage to find 12 1/2 shoes. I have yet to find a pair anywhere and usually have to buy a 13 since the 11 1/2 is the last half size that they sell in almost every store I've been in.

Shoe Carnival seems to pretty regularly carry everything up to 13. I've never seen a Shoe Carnival outside of Virginia (not that I've looked for them, but I lived in Iowa and Illinois for most of my life, visited a few other states, etc).
I have the same problem, but also compounded by an extremely high arch. I wear sandals pretty much all the time, which makes some people think I'm insane (I live in Canada, and I still wear sandals in the winter), but at least my feet don't hurt. I just keep a pair of work boots in the car in case I get stuck.
I've found that Kodiak work boots are pretty comfortable, and they also come in the right size (14), which is nice. The last pair I bought has lasted me about 6 years (3 of them were daily use on concrete). They're usually wide and high enough for me. I always buy Columbia sandals now... they're a lot more comfortable and last longer than anything else I've used before.

I get them at big and tall stores where they have them in extra wide.
Or I just order them from the net, since most places don't have my size.

You can go to http://www.skechers.com/ Directly and buy them or shop around on somthing like http://www.kingsizedirect.com/ or http://www.casualmalexl.com/store/en_US/index.jsp which are both decent big and tall stores as Ive purchesed from both online without any problems, if you can wait for a sale or a coupon they usally have those from time to time too.
Hope that helps

I'm surprised you can stay upright with that little surface area.
