Can't tell you if it's necessarily a good idea, but my cousin did it successfully on the advice of his mother, who's a nurse.
Her only advice was to use Dental floss (less stretchy than thread, and non-porous so it's possible to keep it clean) and tie it really fucking tight. You don't want it loosening and letting half-clotted blood back into your bloodstream.

or, you know, go see your doctor and get it frozen off or whatever.
I had a small skin tag underneath my arm, and obsessive/compulsive me, it annoyed me so much I just clipped it off with a good pair of nail clippers. It stung, but I treated it with alcohol and all was fine after that.
Yeah, if you do a self-removal, be sure to disinfect it, use an antibiotic regularly, and keep a band-aid on it until it heals.
When I started shaving my head I got rid of a couple of moles that had been up there as a side-effect. It hurt considerably for a little while, but I didn't have any complications. There was a lot of blood at first, but they healed quickly. I would personally go the blade route instead of tearing something off, because it will heal faster and with less scarring. YMMV.

I get skin tags on my neck occasionally. Just cut them off with nail clippers, like Archgarth said. You'll have to do it really close if you don't want it to come back again. And for God's sake don't self-medicate with antibiotics - it's unnecessary and overuse of antibiotics is one of the reasons why we have drug-resistant bacteria. Hell, I have a compromised immune system due to immunosuppressant drugs and I've not suffered from any kind of infection from cutting off the skin tags that I get.
Do disinfect both the clippers and the site though, and you'll probably need to put a bandage on it.
And most importantly of all, have fun!

Uh, I didn't mean the OP should start popping prescription pills, I was talking about Neosporin or Bacitracin. That was pretty much standard procedure when you had a bandaged small open wound the last time I checked.

Considering some of the advice that is thrown about 'round these parts, you never can be too sure...

How big is it? Those little fuckers bleed like mad for a long time, so if it's real big you can expect a lot of blood.
