Where can I go to download the Counter-strike mod for the original Half Life? Do I need to use Steam to play it? Do people still play the original Counter-strike?

1.6 is quite terrible though. But if you want it you do need steam, yes.

Does 1.6 still have the Riot Shield? I liked that, too damn fun.

it does, however most servers turned them off. So in a way, no.

You can still play the original CS without steam, but the WON servers are down, so I don't think anybody plays it any more.

But if you have a legal copy of Half-Life, you can enter the CD key into Steam. You get CS and DoD in your account if you do, so no need to purchase anything else.

CS 1.6 (the HL1 mod) makes up for about 50% of all Steam users and servers amazingly. Check out the Stats page on the Steam website. Usually at least 200k CS 1.6 players

edit: I take that back, it is more like 75%

Really? It didn't for me. You have to buy it separately.

Huh. Maybe they don't do that any more. I know when I entered my HLCD Key a few years ago, all the mods and expansions were activated, but maybe now that they're selling them, the free mods are gone.

You should still be able to create a steam account (which is free) and then go to Active a Product and put in your CS Retail / Half-Life CD Key and it will activate your account for those games.

If it is HL it should allow you to play CS 1.6

I stopped playing that when they ruined my glorious combat knives. Slow-mo diving knife throw headshots FTW.

They've just released a new version; that should be catalyst enough to get some PA games going for a little while.

Be warned, the 1.6 players are fucking hardcore. You will die. Lots.
