Yeah, I know, another TV thread. But I've read all the ones on PA H/A for a few months and I still 'don't get it'.
Short story: Tell me what type of TV I need and which brand. Seem to have choice of LCD flat panel, plasma and projection. All seem as expensive as each other at the size I want so I don’t really understand the difference and what might suit me. I am not a brand snob but I do appreciate quality and am not looking for a cheap deal.
Long story/needs:
- Big, probably 56+ inches. Space is not an issue, so it doesn’t have to wall-mount or anything. It’s going on the floor or a stand.
- The room has a *lot* of light (ie: glare) during the day. Pretty much from every angle except behind. EDIT: by 'behind' I mean you're not looking into light when watching TV.
- People will be watching from slightly different angles when there’s lots of people over. Good side views are necessary.
- No hassle, I want lots of plugs so I don't ever have to switch anything out. My current TV requires the s-video to be unplugged or none of the regular inputs will display (and vice versa) ... drives me insane.
- Will be used for (in order of popularity): DVD, Wii, Laptop gaming, PS2, HD TV, other older game systems.
Budget: Lots. Probably $6000 USD would be my max. I'm in Canada though.
Questions:
1. Is there a danger of image burn when really old stuff like Atari or whatever is used? My roommate is a bit of a fan but doesn't play more than a couple of hours at a time on ‘el shitty TV currently…
2. Am I going to need a new receiver? I don't have HD TV now. (If so, is question 3 more relevant to this product than the TV?)
3. How can I make sure I won’t get any BS problems with having to change inputs out when changing over? What ‘wordage’ might I keep an eye out for?

It basically is as good if not better than the panasonic 65" $9000 flagship model, but 2" smaller. I think its a lot better looking though. I would definitely recommend wall mounting it too, these door sized TVs are meant for it.
There are projection TVs out there in the 70" range for $5000 or so, but honestly huge bulky projection tvs cannot hold a candle to the presence of a wall mounted plasma.
