Ran a search, didn't see an SE++ thread on it, and they've been announced for like 4 days now so I figure I might as well just say that um, well...
Great Wall of China represent muhfuckas.
How many of these new 7 Wonders have you seen or visited? Do you think they're pretty cool?
Do you think they should be a Wonder of the world? What's missing? If you voted, what did you vote for?
I've visited the Great Wall a few times in several locations and I'll tell you what... it really is worth checking out at least once in your lifetime, because once you're on it you kinda start getting into just how intimidating it is.
I basically voted for everything that was old and stood the test of time (lol Civilzation references all up ins) and that really made me go WTF when I saw it.
I would've liked to see Angkor Wat, but it's more cool than really a "Wonder of the world" I guess. This is a good mix. Covers a few civilizations, old world and new. Not much new stuff either, which I like.
I've seen one (Colosseum). Seen three of the finalists: Stonehenge, the Eiffel Tower, and the Statue of LIberty. Next semester I'm going to be in Granada, Spain, home of the Alhambra, which was a runner-up, so I'll see that. And next year I'm going to Cambodia so I will visit the Angkor Wat.
I was amazed that the Eiffel Tower became a finalist.
IT'S A TOWER. WHAT THE HELL.
Here's a question: where are the Pyramids?
honestly, the wonders of the world should be gigantic monoliths that make you stop and think how the fuck did puny humans make these? and how did this shit stay up for centuries?
some of these wonders they selected make sense, others shouldn't be wonders at all.

They were one of the original seven wonders of the world tardo.
No I knew that but I was wondering why they weren't just included as one of the actual finalists so that they could be in the final 7. I mean let's face it there's no chance they wouldn't have made it... or even why they didn't just say "you guys get to pick 6 because one spot's reserved for the pyramids ok."

Slave labor and luck.
6 of the original 7 have been destroyed over the centuries.

Christ redeemer should totally not be on there. its like 100 feet and was constructed in 1931. Made out of concrete.
Compare this to the statue of liberty which is 150 feet, with a 150 foot base and constructed in 1886. Liberty was a greater technological feat and is a copper cast statue. way more deserving than the redeemer statue.
Also wasn't this new list selected by like, some stupid internet poll?
Yes, yes it was, but all the same I ain't complaining too loudly about the final 7. Except maybe Christ the Redeemer, but that could just be because I'm not Christian, but that would be unfair to like a few of the other candidates like the Angkor Wat. I just find that statue to be woefully unimpressive.
Like, honestly, a lot of people just forget that many of those wonders were built with technology that we can't even comprehend because it's so simplistic. For stuff to be created that crudely and then last for millenia... that's going to be impressive, period.
I mean, Machu fuckin' Picchu? Even with modern technology we can't come close to how well those stones fit together.

The statue of liberty is also a bit more universally appreciated.

I think the original list was made before the great wall. Or before the greek guy that made the list knew about it. The original 7 are all situated around the Mediterranean.

Here's another question: when I was studying in the States there was a period of mass amounts of French hate, right... that whole "freedom fries" crap or whatever... why didn't people start shouting for the Statue of Liberty to be taken down, eh? EH?
Okay no I KNOW why people didn't do that. But I mean ffs it came from the French and the lady in the statue is a FRENCH emblem from the Versailles palace.
If you're gonna hate on the French you gotta do it right.
(I don't hate the French. There are just entirely too many of them here in Shanghai.)

The acropolis is better, but the Colosseum is pretty awesome. The Colosseum just isn't too pretty. It's an impressive building though.
Somewhere in the D&D thread I read that they're an "honorary wonder" or something. Being the last of the originals still standing.
former mayan capital and home of some huge fucking pyramids
just outside cairo? (giza)
in chichen itza
also I have been to 5 of these places and might visit the taj in like 5 years
I think the Great Pyramid of Giza was an honorary candidate as an automatic in so there would be no uproar if it didn't get voted into the top 7.
They were one of the original seven wonders of the world tardo.
It's really rather arbitrary.

Then again... yeah never mind.
You suck, human race.
Not much to see there.
It wouldn't be so bad if they had the giant golden structure that gave it it's name.
Slave labor and luck.

Because 7 is the most awesome number ever. DUH.
