A friend of mine and myself play all the time, so we're gonna split the game to make it easier to handle, but yeah, it's still cool just to have some new variety of songs to play, and 25 bucks for 4 months of new songs really isnt that bad.
if you're splitting cost, then yeah it's worth it. shit you both get to play it anytime you want and individually you payed $25 for that anytime-you-want playing of GH80's. so, yes doing it that way makes the cost seem better.
It's an obscene price, but I'll end up buying it. I haven't even come close to 5*'ing GH2 on Hard, but I love the game mechanics and it's ace for parties.
So in the interest of drunken frolics, I'll be getting this.
If this were a time period in which Rock Band had never been developed, I would buy this in a second simply because I love GH too much.
But in a universe where I can look at the shitty tracks here and then think about how someday fairly soon I can play the e-drums to good music, I find myself very able to withhold from purchasing this.
I bet that the entire song track will come out on the 360 as some type of DLC for GH2. Like, 40 bucks for all of it.
Um, have you noticed the ass-raping prices for downloadable songs that are already out? This song pack, if it were offered on XBL, would probably be $62.50, based on their current song pack prices.
The pricing thing is really hard. Is it higher than I think it should be? Yes.
However, think about it this way. I paid full retail price for GH1, GH2, & 3 guitars for the PS2. I even bought a second copy of GH2 when I moved, and lost the first copy. That puts me at around a $300 investment in the franchise... and I'm tempted to by a copy for he 360. Given that does it seem impossible to pay another $50 for some new content? No, it seems expensive, but still pretty tempting.
Honestly, for all the bitching about price ... it's really the narrow focus of the expansion that gets me. I don't know about everyone else, but what I like about GH1 and 2 is the variety of guitar-based rock songs available. I mean, I like some cheese-heavy cock-rock just like everyone else, but 30 songs of it? It's like buying the power-ballad heavy order-from-TV Monster Ballads album for the kitsch factor, but after the first three songs you're tired of the kitsch and you want something different.
When I get this (and I will, it's just a matter of price-drops and time), I'll likely pop this in when there's a party, play four songs with friends and then switch out to another disc because someone will want to play something other than '80s music. That's what's stopping me.
My EBGames says they're not getting it till the 24th. In fact, the release date on the EBGames front page says 7/24, yet it seems to be available for online purchase...

...I are confused...
It's probably a mistake because the game is already at the warehouse, in fact stores should be getting it within the next two days. Again, this game is street dated by Activision for July 24th. Even if you order it online, I doubt you'll get it until next week.

So what we're looking for here is someone who's ready to leave their job at Wally-world?

Sadly, some people...especially in my generation...well, they LOVE all things 80's. In the town I live in, several of the clubs have weekly "80's night", where they play nothing but 80's music. I think this game is for those people.
I will buy this game, because I am addicted to GH2. It's not worth $50, but I will still buy it. No bonus songs is a slap in the face though.
That is completely true, I know why they didn't add any but still, the bonus songs have been my favorite part of GH 1 and 2.
Also the analagoy to the 32x and the saturn is not really the same, I mean you can try and com pair 80's to rock band or GH 3 but really, those games are not going to start coming out for at lest another 3-4 months....at lest. for $50 that's 30 more songs you and your friends can play while you wait......30 songs that you might never see again in either franchise (though i really expect the 360 to get its DLC on)
"I Ran (So Far Away)" - A Flock of Seagulls "Heat of the Moment" - Asia
"Turning Japanese" - The Vapors "The Warrior" - Scandal
"Seventeen" - Winger
Oh God, my MTV-addled youth screams at me to purchase this immediately. My wallet weeps, and shrewd marketing executives chortle with glee as they lead me into the nostalgia slaughterhouse. Must be strong! Must resist! ARRRGGGH!!!

"Metal Health (Bang Your Head)" - Quiet Riot
"I Ran (So Far Away)" - A Flock of Seagulls
"No One Like You" - Scorpions
"Heat of the Moment" - Asia
"Radar Love" - White Lion[18][19]
"Holy Diver" - Dio
"Hold on Loosely" - .38 Special
"I Wanna Rock" - Twisted Sister (encore)
"What I Like About You" - The Romantics
"Synchronicity II" - The Police
"Ballroom Blitz" - Krokus[20]
"Round and Round" - Ratt (encore)
"Nothin' But a Good Time" - Poison
I don't know about you guys, but that's 13 out of 30 songs that I would LOVE to play. Honestly, I probably would have bought this game if it had 26 complete shit songs and "I Ran", "Heat of the Moment", Synchronicity II", and Holy Diver". That's right, I probably would have bought this game at $50 for 4 songs, but lo! There are at least 13 songs that I think will be a blast. Music from the 80's is really a mixed bag in that it's either very good or very bad, but I still love it, and I can't wait for this expansion. Granted, I'm a little disappointed that there's only $30 songs, but there's some songs on here that I just can't wait to play, and this is coming from a guy who can't/won't play on anything harder than medium difficulty.

Do we know there are no bonus songs on the retail version? The copy that's been reviewed isn't actually the retail version of the game.
I think we are riding on the patented G&T speculation mode. Gotta love the snowball effect.
I'm confident there will be bonus songs...
3 of which I may actually play more than once
Hmm in the wikipedia entry of guitar hero 80's edition it specifically says it doesn't have any bonus songs.
I'm pretty sure that a Harmonix guy actually said "Hey there's not going to be any bonus songs."
It makes sense because it's an 80's compilation and I suspect going back to the 80s and trying to find some indie stuff would be a huge pain in the ass. Regardless, $50 is a huge ripoff.

They really should have gone through GH1 and 2 and relicensed the songs from the 80's in them for bonus songs in this. Sure alot of people already have them, but it would update some of the GH1 songs for GH2 HoPos and Multiplayer, and no disc swapping for a more complete GH 80's experience.... Too bad.
They should have just done something. Who cares what. The issue at hand is a simple ratio:
# songs / $
They could have either increased the number of songs by either licensing and creating more in the game, be they popular 80s songs or complete unknowns, whatever, or by simply lowering the price. I think $40 would have been reasonable, personally.
But no. They know that this damn thing will probably sell a million copies at fifty bucks a pop. Because it's guitar hero. And everybody always wants more songs.
Phaugh. I almost feel like they were encouraged by the $2/song downloads that were so 'successful' for GHII on the 360. People will buy sets of 3 songs for $6? Then they should be happy that GH Rocks the 80's is only $50!

If you can't tell the difference between Asia, Dio, Anthrax, and Flock of Seagulls, you're sort of... broken. There's actually a broader focus here than there was in GH1 - those were much more uniformly the same type of rock than these are.

Damn it, I wanted "Because It's Midnight" on Rock Band!
Just because its in Guitar Hero, doesnt mean it cant be in Rock Band. Im actually hoping for some songs from GH1, 2, and 80's to return in Rock Band so I can do the drums and vocals on them as well as play them online.

Fuck playing it on guitar, though.

I'll buy it when i find it on the cheap/second hand. There are only about 4 songs I really want to play, but I really, really, really want to play them.
Okay, so this title got a lot of flak (including from me) for being priced at $50. Two caveats now, though.
1) The game's $40 retail at Best Buy. Okay, but still not so awesome.
2) But how does $25 sound? Link courtesy of the awesome gents at Cheapassgamer: order it from Best Buy online and you get a free $15 gift card with it. Not really $25, but it balances out if you were going to buy other shit anyway.
I'm actually really considering it now, seeing as how this fall I'm going to be dropping a boatload of money at Best Buy anyway. Oh, and don't forget the free GH '80s cheesy-ass wristband.

Sold! Thanks for the heads-up. I haven't been checking cheapass recently; that has obviously been a mistake.
Well, I went ahead and bought it. A total GH whore. I will console myself by saving the $15 card solely for Rock Band and/or GH3.
Also, apparently the deal is different for the in-store ads: You only get the gift card when you buy two Guitar Hero related purchases. So this is either an online-only promo or a goof-up, in which case you should take advantage of it before it gets rectified.
