Xbox 360 second controller sign on

I just got an Xbox 360 Elite, and my friend and I are settling in to play Gears of War. On the first controller, I pressed the silver button in the middle and my Xbox recognised it. However, when I pressed the same button on the second controller, all four lights around the silver circle blink simultaneously. I've waited about five minutes and they are still blinking. How do I get my Xbox to recognise this second controller?

    Hit the synch button on the console and the one on the controllor.

    You only need to do this the first time you associate a controllor with a console.
