Quick Vista Question

I have just recieved a new laptop that I purchased for a friend of the family, it came with Vista, which I personally hate, and just to spite me there is an icon on the desktop called "Start Menu" that cannot be removed or deleted (at least not by right clicking or customising the desktop). When you double click it you get taken to a folder with the shortcuts I have "pinned" in the actual start menu.

Any help on removing this icon would be much appreciated!

In XP, you can modify the system icons that appear on the desktop from the display properties, accessable through the control panel or by right-clicking on the background. Vista may very well be different, but it's probably worth a try if you haven't checked there already.

Sounds like the OEM manufacturer messed with the desktop.

Vista never installs with any thing like that. CTRL + Delete doesn't work?

It's been so long since I've posted here, I've removed my signature since most of what I had here were broken links. Shows over, you can carry on to the next post.

    I can't stand OEM installs.

Is this what you mean by "customizing the desktop"?

Also, a factory-done install will probably have shit for boot times. Defender > Tools > Software Explorer > Show for all Users allows you to easily disable programs from starting up automatically. Acrobat and Quicktime seem to be big offenders here, as they like to run in the background.

Its all change in Vista, I can't find anything by right clicking the desktop and going to "personalize" as its called now, nor in control panel.

Ctrl + Delete didnt work, nor can i drag it to the recycle bin.

I should say this wasnt there when the machine first came up, I've downloaded windows update and anti virus on it and thats it. It literally just added itself (i know thats stupid. but thats how it seems). I have changed the Start menu to "classic" but I don't think it happened at the same time.

I did pin IE7 to my actual Start Menu, it may have happened when I did that.

Its a fuji/Siemens, and apart from adobe stuff (which I stopped from booting with the computer) its the best OEM install (especially for vista) Ive seen in a long time. I cant delete it as shown in that article, sorry I didnt mean customise, I meant "personalize". (what used to be right click/properties).

Ok I went back to the normal start menu, then returned to "classic" again and now its gone! I don't know why, but it seems to be fixed :S thanks guys!!
