I'm visiting Charleston SC this weekend and I'm looking for some recommendations as to things to see and especially places to eat. I plan on visiting the Gibbes art museum, the Calhoun Mansion and possibly the Magnolia Plantation. Any other things I should visit and especially what are some good places to have lunch and dinner in the downtown area?
Well I'm not sure this is in the same vein of "dining recommendations" that you're looking for but...
I lived in Charleston for 3 years when I was young. The thing I remember most, oddly enough, are the street hot dogs. If you're really hungry and don't feel like stopping somewhere to eat a "real" meal, get a hot dog from one of the street vendors with all the fixins. I just remember as a kid I would go to the Battery Park with all the cannons, climb around on those, then go and get a hot dog from a street vendor. They're great.
I also know that my parents would always go to this French restaurant for dinner. They were in love with the place, but I can't remember the name. I'll give them a call and see if they remember what it was.
Just plan on walking around a lot. Downtown, visit Battery Park, check out some of the old houses, and just wander around. The market is actually kind of irritating and overpriced. There are tons of cool old cemeteries and churches to go in. I enjoyed going to Drayton Hall. Also, visit Patriot's Point and check out the Yorktown. You can basically wander around the ship on self-guided tours. Pretty neat stuff.
As far as food is concerned, for a nice meal check out Magnolia's or High Cotton. There's a little place I like on Mount Pleasant called the Mustard Seed.
