Quick eBay question (Round 2)
AbsoluteZeroThe new film by Quentin KoopantinoRegistered Userregular
I got another question here... rather than starting a new thread I thought I'd just ask in this one.
Some guy just sent me a message asking if he could pay me by making a deposit to my bank account. This kindof put up a red flag in my little brain... is this guy trying to scam me? Or am I just paranoid? I have a quick question that I'm asking here because I can't find any info on it in eBay's help section.
If I am putting up an item for auction that someone else has up for auction, is it against the rules for me to send messages to that person's bidders notifying them of my auction?

Thought I'd find out before I did it. See I have a rare item I'm going to put up, and there's only one other listing for it up on eBay and it's about to end.
Is it against the rules or frowned upon to contact those bidders after the other auction ends?
Officially, any unsolicited contact is frowned upon, but if its a rare item why not give it a try? The only reason it is frowned upon is because it opens the door to more fruad--keep your intentions pure and if you get yelled at for doing it, then that's probably about the worst that will happen.
I've had a similar situation where I was selling a prototype yo-yo that never went into production. I contacted the seller directly and asked if he wouldn't mind letting his buyers know that I was going to be having the auction in exchange for waiting until the end of his auction to list my item.

Yeah, that sounds fishy. I'd pull the ol' "well Paypal is linked to my bank account, so you're welcome to pay me using that." line. Assuming you are willing to take Paypal, that is.

I told him paypal only but now I'm kindof worried about what to do if the guy wins the auction...

What do you have listed as your "Accepted Payment methods"?
If it's clearly listed that you only take Paypal, then you're safe. Then if he passes because he can't do the bank transfer, you're given the option to re-list (I believe for free), or you can put it into a temporary state where other bidders that didn't win will be notified of it being in this state, and then can choose to pass, or buy.
I've had this happen to me a couple times.

I wish eBay's own help section was this helpful.
