Not sure, but back in the day - when I played accounts were going for 400-600 easily.

No, you can earn most of the stuff through the digital money earned by killing people.
In this particular case, though, you could probably buy the best stuff that guy has, for far less that $8000. Unless there's some sort of point-only or tournament prize stuff, though, though that probably doesn't make too big of a difference. The only way to get any value out of the account would be to keep pretending to be the guy, which would be impossible considering that he's going to tell everyone his account was stolen (or turn up dead).
Yeah - it may have been the news article just blowing things out of proportion, but i've seen "the best" sort of stuff in games go for abnormally large amounts. First place anything is more of a novelty if someone purchased it.
