I've basically figured out that I don't really need a desktop computer. I want to make my laptop my primary (only) machine, and I think it will do fine after a couple upgrades. However, it's not super new, and it seems like almost all the laptop hdd's I'm seeing are sata. Will they work on my machine?
I have an HP Pavilion ze5500. It's a pentium 4 machine and the hard drive currently installed is listed as IC25N040ATMR04-0. My ide controller is an ALi M5229 PCI Bus Master IDE Controller. I don't see any sata controller listed. Would this drive work?
Also, this laptop had a cd read/write dvd read-only drive. Any good internal dvd writers that would match up with the case properly that anyone has had a positive experience with? I'm thinking I'll just end up going external for that, but if it was a good fit and not too expensive internal would be prefered. Thanks!
no SATA drives will work in your machine. SATA is a different interface and you need a controller for it. There are lots of IDE laptop drives still around. I actually just bought a 100GB one last week. so just keep looking.
as for the internal optical drive, you're very limited on that. I would inquire right to HP about buying a drive for it.
Thanks for the info. I think my confusion stems from the fact that newegg didn't have ide listed as one of the hdd types. They do have ata-6 listed, which after a quick look thru google, seems to be ide. Will this drive work in my system?
Also, if it will, is there any reason that I should get this one instead (no free shipping)? Or this one ($10 more)?
